I’m torn between a decision. I’m putting the power head back on but the manual calls for no sealant on the power head adapter gasket. It just seems like failure considering it is just a paper gasket. Most people say to not put any sealant on that gasket. Can any of you give me any insight on what would be the appropriate call?

Well I think your good to go , snot perfect but that looks like a lot of used motors and I have seen way worse that was still running . If you cant feel the marks they cant be that bad . If the engine went ok last season and has reasonable compression Id let it pass . I think such marks are likely caused by a bit of carbon getting between piston and cyl and getting dragged up and down for a bit . I think if anything metalic( piston circlip of piece of broken ring or reed valve petal ) got in there damage would be worse
You could remove bits for further inspection but unless your planning on a rebuild if you find serious damage there is probly not much point , gotta admit tho, curiosity would see me wanting to pull the bypass covers as racerone says , relatively easily done .
Wipe the bores with a clean oily rag , chuck the heads on and do a comp test and if its OK try and forget what you saw and enjoy some boating. It aint that bad 🙂
Do you use sealant on the power head to adapter gasket? My manual says no but I don’t know if I trust not using it

It is a genuine OMC Service Manual? Is the Gasket a genuine OMC/BRP part?

Farr canal jimmbo. ,who cares if it a omc manual ,or if the gasket is omc/brp .....they dont make gaskets, they buy them in from one of the many proprietary gasket makers ....probly not even the same one over the years.
The only thing putting sealant on the gasket will do (apart from sealing ) is make it harder to get off .Im thinking if the book say no sealant then its probly not needed but ......whenever I find myself in this situation , usually rocker covers , that I need to seal well but also come off easily I put sealant ( or gasket cement )on one side of the gasket to stick it to the rocker cover and I put grease on tother side so it comes off easily, stays stuck to the cover and can be re-used many times.

Thank you for that insight. That helps me a lot! I appreciate it!

The gasket I have for the power head says made in USA. So that’s good enough for me. Could be Chinese or worse
Some peeps get hung up on "factory" parts and its bollocks coz most of the "factory" parts are not made in the factory but bought in .
A US made gasket is no guarantee that its actually any good coz 5hit is made everywhere but in all probability it is good quality coz most stuff made in the US is good ( cept some of the cars you lot have come up with😁 ).
Dissin the Chinese is something we will learn to regret, all there stuff aint all crap by a long shot . I think the issue is that some peeps , specially those in a franchise are not inclined to think outside the square when it comes to getting parts.
50 bucks is 50 bucks , I bought my gasket set off ebay China , couldnt fault it and ⅓ the cost of the Tohatsu set .....no brainer .
Sounds to me like your one of us guys who has enough nouse to take the successful economy approach to restoration/repair of your toys 😁😁😁 .

At one time the factory gasket was wire re-enforced.----Much more durable than the paper thin " looks the same " item.
Far out ,I havnt seen one of those types of gasket for a blimmin long time , I think it was on a 2 stroke power hammer, But I do remember skewering my finger on a bit of wire stickin out of it .
It would be like reinforced concrete. Maybe with modern machining and materials such gaskets are no longer required . In the bad old days gaskets sometimes had to be thicker to allow for poor gasket surface finishing and support and I guess sometimes they needed such mesh to hold them together
Stuff seems to go together better now days 🙂

I would never install an aftermarket ( paper thin ) gasket for this V-4 / V-6 application.

I guess that depends on what you call thin . The thinnest gasket sheet I have is .7mm .
I was repairing a motorbike gearbox and the way to set end float on the main shaft was gasket thickness on the end cover/case joint . I wound up using a page of a school exercise book to get the last few thou. Cover was doweled on but did hold the bearings for the 3 shafts ( 74 850t Guzzi )......doesnt even leak 😁.
I hear what your sayin racerone , there is def the wrong type of gasket to use in some applications, but I bet we have all at sometime been involved in cutting a cereal packet up to make a gasket just to get things moving again . 🙂 , I have even used a couple of layers of a pillowcase and spray bomb paint .

That’s all that’s available for this engine. Is a paper gasket. I’ve searched everywhere. I was a technical inspector on chinook helicopters in the military. I’m pretty good at researching. No such gasket exist other than paper material

I’ve seen gaskets for other engines that are a lot thicker and have some metal material. But for this engine they don’t exist unfortunately. I have to use what’s available. I installed it with gasket sealing compound and seems to be fine. I’ll know more when I fire her up
