Yea, I guess your ok, But it sure looked bad when I blew the picture up.
Looked like I could see part of the oil control ring center section. But the hi-res pic cleared that up.
Sure is nice to actually see and work on an engine when troubleshooting.

Don, when I looked at the picture you posted with the writing I started to panic because it looked just like you described. I had to go look in the engine to double check :)

Since the cylinder is "ok" then I still have a timing issue?

What torque pattern are you using and what value torque for the head bolts?

I'm using the one from the seloc manual for the head bolts and valve cover. what is "valve torque for the head bolts"?

The first time I replaced the gasket I took a copper brush and lightly brushed down the head. The block and head were "clean" when I took it apart. Is there something I should use (liquid?) to get it clean?

high quality carb cleaner, brake clean, or acetone oughta do the trick..... use a razor blade and gently scrape (you don't want to be pulling off material here) some people don't like wire brushing because it can remove material... some people do it anyways.
I use 3M roloc discs myself, never have a problem

Still trying to determine what ft/lb`s your using when installing the head bolts
and the sequence.
eg: 20,40,60,85
each bolt must be taken down equally in steps amd in the correct pattern to prevent a warp.what are you using for the final torque setting?

Well, you are in the SN range for the Service Bulletin. Here it is.
Service Bulletin 98-14

Timing has probably been your biggest problem, but it isn't now..
As mentioned, the white stuff may be from water steam cleaning that area of the piston. But that is not the biggest problem.
Look at your piston some more. See what I see.
This happened because of timing.

Just be lucky you didn't see this when you popped the head.......

...Then you'd be here....

[edit] Why did the 3.0 pistons change to flat top?

I am torquing them down in the pattern that is in my seloc manual. Can't remember the correct pattern. I believe the final torque setting is 95ft/lbs for the head bolts. I'll check when I get home from drill.

So Don, then I'm back to just a timing issue?

May be a timing issue. Could be warped head. If it all checks out, then put it back together by-the-book.
Use that Seloc for kindling or something. Click Here and download manual #26 for your engine. And use it. You need a special process to set the timing.

Don, and all,

Thanks for all the help. If it weren't for guys like you all I would be spending tons of money.(like on my seloc book) Plus I like working on my own engine.

Also, how do i download the manual? I can just view it online.

Depending on what version of Adobe Acrobat reader you have. With version 7 there is a button on the left side of the tool bar that says "Save a copy"
Just click on it and save to your desktop so you can find it.
