Blown New Power Pack

I just had installed a new powerpack on my 1989 Evinrude 140 Looper engine. I also changed all the plugs at the same time. It fired up great for about 10 minutes, then went dead. Would not start again. When I checked for spark, there was no spark at any plug wire.

I changed out the powerpack due to multiple failures in the wires on the old pack to the coils. Twice I limped home on 3 cylinders when these brittle wires failed. So, I thought a new powerpack would take care of everything.

This was an aftermarket powerpack, as OE is no longer available. What could I have done wrong? Any ideas on what fried this new powerpack? I have a new one coming and do not want to make the same mistakes.

The new powerpack said "requires factory specified inductive type plug. I used the standard plug I always use - a champion model from West Marine that is listed in the champion guide. Could that be the problem?

Thanks

Thanks for your help. So what would cause voltage to go through the black and yellow kill wire? I put the batttery on a charger with positive cable removed the night before. Then attached positive cable when I went to start it. Could that have caused a problem with excess voltage?

Any other ideas on what would send voltate to the black and yellow kill wire?

Borchick,

I bought an aftermarket brand for $180 off Ebay - a guy in FL says he sold 400 of them with no trouble. Where do you see the original replacement model for sale?

The parts breakdown still shows them as available.

Re: Blown New Power Pack

Voltage could be leaking from a faulty ignition switch. In addition a bad timer base can also contribute to destroying a power pack. I've gone through several packs in the past and purchased all of them from Pro Marine out of Florida. The last one I bought was an OEM and haven't had a problem yet. Pro Marine sells CDI. I did not try a Sierra and don't know if they are any better. Hope this helps.
