Re: Boat Buyers Beware!!!

It is funny just to lead him on....waste his time for wasting so many others....And Rob I think you are on the right track. By messing with him a little bit you are learning more about how the scams work.... It just allows you to be more aware of what is goin on.

I am interested, and I think others maybe too. The reason for this post was just to bring awareness to these scammers and hopefully forum members will not get caught up in this mess. Unfortunately people are getting scammed or these people would not be doing this.

Have a great day,

Rob.

Re: Boat Buyers Beware!!!

This is a variation of the car scam common on Craigslist, advertise a car at a price that is almost too good to be true. When you bite the owner just happens to be out of the country, so please send your money here and we'll arrange for you to get the car. Not unlike some of the eBay scams involving bogus 2nd Chance offers to unsuccessful bidders including bidders on outboards.

You can also suggest that your brother the cop lives in Quebec, he's willing to run by the shipper and take a look at the boat for you, and you doubt they'd have a problem letting your brother in just to take a look....see if you get a response. :D

I bought (separate deals) a motor and a inflatable on E-Bay this summer, and asked for serial numbers from the sellers on all that I bid on. I said I wanted the numbers to run through the police computers to check to see if they had at some time in their life been stolen. The honest sellers not only sent pictures of the reregistration plates, but also offered me a chance to see the items, should I like before bidding.

But many never answered the mails, with request for information on the motors.

Some had long complicated stories as to why it was not possible. The motors are in other countries at vacation homes, or mounted on boats belonging to friends who are at the moment not reachable, being tested to see that everything is perfect with them, as advertised, etc.

I often was told there would be plenty of time to check the numbers, after I won the auction and paid.

Several times I was told that the plates were missing. The police here said they (the seller) needed to go to the police station in their town, to get a paper from them (the police) that said they were indeed the owner, before selling, and that without this paper, I should not pay a penny when picking up the motors. After explaining this to some of the sellers they refused to answer any more mails.

Several times I found the same pictures, running under multiple actions, by multiple people, at different addresses in Germany. E-Bay & Co are of little or no help with these scams, or with the sales of stolen property.

The police asked for the E-Bay information on the sellers, should this be the case, and they would have their investigators contact E-Bay.

Be careful with anything you buy, or with any contact you make on the Internet.

His latest reply

Rob, as soon as I will have your full name and the address where you want the boat to be shipped, I will initiate the transaction through Kijiji and they will contact you with all the necessary information. I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Have a great day,

Rob.

Re: Boat Buyers Beware!!!

Well I thought I would string him along a little more to try and find out how his scam works. I have already sent kijiji and e-mail with the details. Here is the response that I sent him. Of course I would never post my real name or location where I live.

My name is Rob Lofass and I would like the boat shipped to Prince George, B.C. I will pick it up at the shippers location in Prince George. Will Kijiji be contacting me via e-mail? Is there a phone number where I could reach you? Would like to discuss the shipping issue and take a look at the boat in Quebec. I could buy it in Quebec then you do not have to worry about shipping it.

Just wait to hear what he says now. On the kijiji website they do not take part in any transaction so I wonder how that part of the scam will work.

Re: Boat Buyers Beware!!!

Should send him a fake cashiers check.

I had a scammer on a dating website of all things and she was good but not good enough to fool me. I did my research and played with her for the longest until she finally asked for money, then I asked if she heard of such and such website that explains the type of scam she was doing, told her that I'm not a dumb a** and it would take allot more effort then that to trick me. I let her have it big time. I can't remember all of what I said in my final reply to her but it was good trust me probably couldn't post it on here anyway.

Did a similar thing with a 94 Crestliner for $5,300. Craigslist ad turned into a fake ebay page and the guy never would let me have a surveyor come buy.

Finally had a bad day at work and took it out on the scammer. Doubt I could reproduce what I wrote here without getting in big trouble :)

Re: Boat Buyers Beware!!!

Yep he is now asking for $$. Sent him an e-mail stating that he won`t be getting any until the legitimacy of this deal is verified. I told him that this transaction has triggered many fraud alarms. He has done a nice job in making it appear that the transaction is through Kijiji. But Kijiji has nothing to do with any transaction. The following is from an e-mail he sent me. I have also forwarded some correspondance to Kijiji. The Moneygram transfer, fraudsters love that.

Payment must be sent by: MoneyGram Money Transfer? Service
Next step to be taken: The buyer must send the payment to the seller

It is recommended to send the payment as soon as possible, because your purchase protection is valid for 30 days only. Sending the payment by any other method of payment will void this transaction and your right to refund.

Re: Boat Buyers Beware!!!

I sent an e-mail to Kijiji, and here is the response:

Thank you for contacting Kijiji Canada Community Support.

This is a scam. At no time does Kijiji or Ebay hold vehicles for any seller on
our site. We do not offer any verification or insurance. Kijiji is a local
platform and all transactions are private sales that are worked out between
the seller and buyer. Please meet all people in person to verify the product,
payment and person. Never wire any money to anybody at any time.

So that verifies what most of us thought. It is definitely a scam.

Have a great day,

Rob.

>>The price I want to obtain for it is C $4,200 and if you agree with it we can start to complete the transaction. I realize that is a cheap price for such a product but my special situation makes me do things that I wouldn't do in normal circumstances<<

Send him a "BAD" check for 10 Grand and tell him to put your $ 5800 "change" in CASH in the boat under the floormat and send away

Re: Boat Buyers Beware!!!

I definitely would advise against sending a bad check. They could easily say that this was a legitimate sale and that intentionally passing a bad check is a federal crime. Remember, the proof would NOT be on them to prove the sale was legit, only that you intentionally sent a bad check.

The risk is low, yes, but I would just turn around and walk away rather than play any games with them.

Re: Boat Buyers Beware!!!

Tell him the payment was made through Kijiji as requested and they will hold the payment till the boat is delivered
Ask him for the particulars on shipping and when you can expect delivery
If we're all wrong (and I doubt we are) you can always pay for the boat

Re: Boat Buyers Beware!!!

After all else that screams SCAM in the ad itself and the replies, the Money Gram is a dead giveaway. Can't be traced on the other end once the money has been picked up. I sat in a professional security seminar a few days ago the subject of how scammers use wire transferes came up. While wiring money is a legit thing to do, the no questions asked manner companies use makes it easy to move money like this in a nearly untraceable manner.

Re: Boat Buyers Beware!!!

There are lots of things that I would like to do to this idiot. Send him a fake cheque etc. But then I would also be committing fraud, something that I will not do. The next best thing is to make people aware so they don't get scammed by these jerks.

Have a great day,

Rob.

Re: Boat Buyers Beware!!!

I found an atv on craigslist and it was a 10,000$ atv for 4,000 with 5,000 in extras. Same scenario i couldn't see it. they had to phone number or address. It looked like the same setup scam as mine. anyway i told him to **** himself.
he said the shipping company would hold my money for 7 days haha they dont do that.

The funniest part was i went on Google and found the pictures of the atv ahha BS.

Re: Boat Buyers Beware!!!

I was posting on this forum about a boat I found on craigslist that had a pretty good price. I was skeptical, but it turned out to be a really good deal. As we were leaving the seller today after posting a deposit and waiting untill the banks open Monday he told me this....he also has a travel trailer for sale. He was sent a 10k cashiers check for the travel trailer and asked to send the remainder (2.5k) to the buyer. He had already gone to his bank to deposit the fake cashiers check, not being aware of these scams. It wasn't untill the bank alerted him it was fake that he knew it was a scam. Thankfully he had not sent the difference. Not everyone is aware of these things.
