Re: Boat I bought to restore

I also just pulled the windshield glass since the starboard side has a scratch and they were leaking as well. I had a place called barracuda make me a couple new pieces, they came out nice, this is the wholesaler that makes them for my cabinetry that I build, so I get a pretty good price. The windshield frame is aluminum that is painted silver, so since I have some house of Kolor orion silver left over from a recent job, that is what I am using. I am going to spray the base coat, then 3 coats of clear.

I have a million things going right now with this boat and even have a new instrument panel with spar varnish drying in my garage right now. I made a new instrument panel out of 1/4" cherry veneer ply and it will have around 5 coats of spar varnish on it when it's done.

I will post some pics of the panel when done. I bought a set of Beede gauges, the two main gauges are multifunctions with a tach, oil press, and water temp. I also have trim gauges, hour meters, fuel gauge, and a synchronizer.

That's funny, the little boat is my brother's 17'6" sea sprite. He scored a pretty good deal there, only $400.

Well, I've been hard at work (late at night) and have finished the hull painting. I ended up putting on 3 coats of the Epifanes 2 part poly and I am pleased with the results.

Here's a side shot to show how well this stuff flowed out. I only rolled it on and tipped it off with a badger hair brush!

[/IMG]The definition of gloss here is pretty awesome!

Well, for those of you asking, I did start some cabin and cockpit work and assembly!

Since the cockpit sole had no soft spots, I ground out and filled all the holes with thickened epoxy.

There is a shot of the cabin with the beginnings of the assembly. Another few solid days of assembly and the cabin should be pretty well re assembled!

I do have a lot of wiring for the lighting, so that will take plenty of time.

Here's a couple of shots of the aft cabin. I recovered all the wall panels and the flooring with mildew resistant vinyl instead of the hull liner fuzz.

Here's a reminder of what it looked like when I got it, pretty gross!

Thanks, and Merry Belated Christmas to you as well. I am really able to do this in part because of this forum. I have been lurking around here for awhile and have learned a lot for everyone's restorations, and the always professional advice of the moderators and members. This is the best place to learn about boats and their restoration.

more cabin pics to follow!

Re: Boat I bought to restore

Well, the holidays have been busy but I have managed to spare some time to work on the beast, and I have made a little progress. The interior is coming along nicely and is almost assembled. I added and replaced some 12V wiring that had been spliced badly so I thought I better just get rid of it while I have the cabin apart. I also wired it with coax cable for cable tv, and added a plug outlet in the aft cabin wall for the tv I want to eventually mount there.

That is the cabin, in the middle of my work and a bit of a disaster. The other morning I had to empty my tools out of the boat so I could actually do some work (to make money)!. I don't have any doors installed in the cabin at this point, but I am in the process of making them.

Here's a shot of the galley, not a very good one, but here's the progress. got the counters in the cabin, (my neighbor helped me an entire Saurday with laminating the counters since I installed some cabinets in his home office for him). I got the sink, faucet, and cooktop in as well.
The overhead cabinets are covered in a stuff called "whisper" and feels leathery. It's really nice and I like it better than the fur that was on it before. The bottoms of the inside of the overhead cabinets are laminated in white Formica, and should be easier to wipe off than that fur stuff.

Progress continued...

The house wiring is also just about finished and it tested o.k. I added a 120V duplex in the bar cabinet in the cockpit area so I could plug in a tv or a blender or whatever.

This is the lower bulkhead for the v-berth and is in front of the water tank. That is a decent little storage area and the door is going on next. I upholstered the parts that I thought would probably get dirty with the espresso colored micro-suede. I like it better than the burghundy velour.

V-berth area without the mattress or anchor locker hatch installed. It seems pretty comfortable up here! Can't wait til summer!

Of course, the toilet is still dirty! I'll clean that later! I probably need to take it out and rebuild it. Has anyone here ever done that? I don't know what I may need but feel that I should get it done.

This is where I plan on installing the lcd tv. I think I'm going to buy one at sam's they have a good deal on one now.

Once again, my brother did an awesome job cleaning the stove. It didn't seem that heavily used, but was really dirty and of course the alcohol canisters are gone.

Anyways, this is my most recent progress and is coming along well. I am going to post a pic of the new instrument panel in a few. The varnish is dry so I can take a pic now.

Thanks Man! I have spent a lot of time working and researching this project and the light at the end of the tunnel is slowly starting to emerge.
I'm glad you like the color, I originally wanted to go darker but my partner in the boat (my father) wanted the royal blue and now that it is done I really like it too.

I can't wait till I get the stereo and all the electronics installed so I can have some fun playing with those!

robthompson66,
As always your work is great. I really like the look.
A lot of boats have dark interiors and always look dark.
Yours should be very bright and comfortable.
Nice work on the cabinets too.
Keep the pic's coming.

Re: Boat I bought to restore

Well, I have made some progress on the boat, but work has been busy so not a whole lot..

I installed the bar here and I think it looks great! I made the counter awhile ago but finally installed it. It is mahogany coated with mirror coat bar top.

Here are a couple back shots of the instrument panel that I made. I am still waiting to get the other colors of wire that I need, then I can finish.

Here is a pic of the front. I used beede gauges, along with a dual function lowrance depth/temp gauge. The black gauge on the right is the original sync gauge. I just ordered a matching beede one to go in its place.

The wood is 1/4" cherry veneer ply with 5 coats of marine varnish.

Well, next I am going to install the helm and cabin door. I finished painting them awhile ago as well but I will finally have time to install them.

Well, off to shovel snow!

I know all about the snow. :)

Damn man that boat is going to be slick. You want to just keep it in the marina and enjoy the interior :)

Re: Boat I bought to restore

That is one major project but I'm impressed by the way you are tackling it head-on...this will be one to keep after all this great work:D

Your workspace is nothing short of cavernous, you could rebuild a b-2 bomber in there. Glad to see you making such good progress and can't wait to see her all finished. It is really cool that you've got the whole family involved, I wish I had a brother around I could assign jobs to LOL:D

I will go back to work on my 16' rig and dream of owning a monstrous aft-cabin cruiser someday:)
