Well, a minor SHT. My boat's a piece of junk, basically. The hull's sound, but the furniture...well...it ain't much.

So, I take my brother-in-law out for a spot of fishing on the three-day weekend just past. We have a great time...catch a bunch of fish.

I'm sitting behind the side console in my swivel seat, fishing away. Brother-in-law says, "Hey...that seat doesn't look too stable, there."

"Nah...I say," as I lean back in the seat. Pow! The swivel breaks in half and I'm unceremoniously dumped on the deck.

After a lot of good-hearted laughter from both of us, I check it out. Yup, cheap (and old) swivel has separated in two parts.

So...the rest of the day, I'm sitting on a little, greasy square of metal to drive the boat. I guess it's time to replace that thing....or pad the swivel half....

You look like your Avitar! Did you lose your wizard cap by the sheer speed of your boat?

Thanks for sharing about your adventure!

That looks exactly like my brother's Glastron with the '78 35hp on it that I can't beat. He loves his. Go get 'em CAT.

James,

That's it. I sure get tired of having to buy new wizard hats after every boating trip. Maybe if I wear it backwards?

Fireman,

Cool. I like mine a lot, too. It's ugly, but who cares? Goes fast, too.

Yah, sure. Santa's out fishing for Northerns during the Summer. And those new LED lights are probably the most expensive thing on this rig.

As for my resemblance to Jerry Garcia...well...Elvis is still alive somewhere, too, I hear.

Your tow vehicle must be a screamer, looks like she's worn the trailer tires down to nothing.

Aren't those little wheels and tires cute? They're adequate, though. The fenders were an addon...the old ones had rusted off. Gets me to the lake, and that's all I require.

Nah...my wife says I'm way better looking than Jerry, and I trust her to tell me the truth. Besides, Jerry was a fat guy, and I'm just 188 and 6' 1".

But, what the heck! Maybe I'll show up and say I'm Jerry and I'm not dead. I can play a little guitar, and I can sing at least as well as Jerry.

Time for a comeback, eh?

CAT, brother was down this weekend to give me a break from caring for our Mom and I showed him the picture of your boat. I thought he was going to crap his britches he was laughing so hard. He thought he was the only one left in the world with a boat like that.

Re: Boat Maintenance SHT

Aw, heck. There are lots of old beaters like mine here in MN. They're cheap and serviceable, so lots of folks have them.

I have way less than $1000 in the thing, and it starts and runs every time. No water in the bilge. I think I'll keep it.

Yesterday, I was trolling on my favorite lake, with the old Johnson going "blub...blub...blub" about 1.5 mph. When I stopped, this guy in a big bass boat pulled up nearby and asked how old that engine was. He was in his late twenties, it looked like.

I told him it was a '58 model, and he just about laid an egg. So, I turned the key, and started trolling along again.

What works....works. From the look of his tackle, he has more money in the three rods and reels on his boat than I have in my whole outfit.

So, tell your brother to enjoy his old beater boat. Someday, when he gets a chance to tow some guy in a late model boat back to the ramp, he'll feel really good.

I have done that several time with my Boat. It was bought new by my grandfather and he used it all the time till it went to me.

Ugly but runs great.

fun to pull in new boats after they laughed at how ugly my boat was at the dock

What is it with some boaters? They feel quite free to insult your boat at the ramp. Now, I know my boat is ugly (heck, so am I) but what's it matter to anyone else? My Momma told me when I was about 3 years old that it's not polite to comment on appearances. Seems like a good plan to me.

I'm really happy for the guy who can afford a $40,000 boat. Good for him. I have other priorities, and have no interest in putting myself into debt for a boat, for pete's sake.

I know this much: I'd just love to find one of the insulting guys dead in the water on the lake. I'd give 'em a tow, but they'd hear about their rudeness as part of the package. Their boat is great...no doubt...but if they need a tow, then my boat is better than theirs at being a boat.

I always laugh at my setup. My boat could sell for 2 grand tops, and seats are crap, but I still catch fish.

Thats what its all about.

Ken

Re: Boat Maintenance SHT

Me, too? My boat's a floating dump, but it floats, and the outboard runs sweet as can be. I don't boat to impress. I boat to fish, and a shiny new boat doesn't have anything to do with fishing success.

Yesterday, I was in the middle of a bunch of shiny boats. They weren't catching anything, but I was killing the Northerns. Maybe it's the dull olive drab boat. No shiny stuff to scare the fish?

Best fisherman I know has an old wooden boat with peeling paint and a 5 hp Clinton-based Sea King outboart. He's in his 80's. Catches fish when nobody else is catching anything, not even me.
