Re: Boat Maintenance SHT

I just gotta ask, what your tow vehicle?<br /><br />Hope it’s an old one like mine, 1978 F250.<br /><br />I always say, as long as it gets me there and back, but the main thing is “the back part”.

Wow you could get 2000 for your boat :) i thing i would have to pay someone to take mine LOL.<br /><br />I fish on the suwannee river and many times have to tow newer boats upstream back to the landing.<br /><br />Goes from ugly boat to damn fine running boat you got yourself. <br /><br />Now if my boat was as new as my truck i would be jumping for joy lol

For what it's worth, I have what some may call a flashy boat, but I have respect for others and love almost anything that floats. ;) This includes the Jerry clone and his boat too, cool :D .<br /><br />The only thing I'll insult at the launch ramp are those that wipe 'em down making others wait to launch or other similarly stupid/selfish antics . . . Your boat and beard would get a smile from me.

monoshock, <br /><br />Sorry, but the tow truck is a 1999 GMC Jimmy. I have to draw the line somewhere.<br /><br />Marauderk,<br /><br />Yessir. When you're towing someone, somehow your old boat looks pretty good to them. On the other hand, some guy in a really, really nice boat asked me about my outboard the other day. I told him what year it was, and he just said, "Sweet."<br /><br />Quietcat,<br /><br />Nothin' at all wrong with shiny boats. I just can't justify buying one.

I thought I was the only one who got alot of nasty comments at the ramp. <br />I paid $750 for my old starcraft and would trade it for nothing!Runs great!----wish my truck did - fuel pump took a crap 1/4 mile from home .Looks like about 400-500 bucks for a stupid pump.<br />My old 84 f-150 fuel pump only cost 30 bucks.

Me either, but I did it anyway ;) No offense, just wanted to point out that some of the shiny boater crowd has some class too . . . well I guess in my case that's debatable. :D

Re: Boat Maintenance SHT

CAT you already know about my old boat. Paid 250.00 for 14.5ft Steury, olive drab, no gelcoat, with an old tower of power 50hp mrec on back that was locked up. Tore out and replaced the stringers and deck. Have to do the transom sometime soon. Put my little 25 hp on it and away I go. Sold the old merc ('72) to a guy who needed a lower unit for 100.00 and I have another 200 in materials in it. I'm trying to get a picture posted so you and dHadley can see what we were working with. Picture your boat but about 1.5 feet narrower and you have a pretty good picture of mine. I had a 58 35hp johnson that ran like a dream. Real nice tank with it and I let a guy buy it for 100.00. He really needed it and I knew he would take care of it so I basically gave it to him. I ran the Ohio a lot of years with that old beast. Hated pulling that rope though even though she would start with no more than three pulls.

Fireman,<br /><br />Hey, maybe we need a new thread over in the Boating forum for all of us who have old, dilapidated boats, motors and trailers. Everyone posts a photo of their boat. It could be the highlight of that forum, I'd think.<br /><br />I'm always encouraged by stories of folks who boat without the huge expense of a new boat. I think it might be encouraging to others, as well.

Does a 75 Starcraft with an 1980 Evinrude count?<br /><br />I love this boat (assuming I get it running) but the seats don't match the boat, the helm has holes for where I took useless guages out, the floor is soft, I have a little stool to get on the bow and it could use a paint job and a good cleaning as well as a new windsheild peice.<br /><br />But it's cheap and I'll find out this weekend if it runs.

Appreciate that but (and I need to update the web page) I'm pretty much done.<br /><br />Had it in the water a couple weeks ago but a leaking TNT kept me from going anywhere.<br /><br />Saturday will be my first real trial.

Re: Boat Maintenance SHT

More of the seat follies: <br /><br />So, after that trip, described in the first post, I re-attached the seat to the pedestal, forgoing the swivel business altogether. I just lag screwed the seat to the remaining half of the swivel. Very nice. Worked great.<br /><br />So, today, I took my 7-year-old nephew and his non-boating, non-fishing dad out for a day on the lake. The kid caught his first fish (a nice slabby bluegill) and several more.<br /><br />The seat? Well, I sat down in it and leaned back right at the courtesy dock when we launched. The back of the seat came off...the lag screws holding it to the folding frame just pulled right out of the plywood on the seat back. So, today, I got to drive the boat on a backless seat. Not so bad, though. With the lack of a swivel, not having a back made it easier to turn around.<br /><br />I've just gotta do something about this. Let's see...duct tape? Nah. I know....I'll buy a new seat and a new swivel. Fun times on the water, and a kid with his first fish!

I LOVE that style of boats CAT. Our family had a cabin on Bone Lake in Luck, Wi. when I was a kid (born & raised in No. St. Paul 'til my dad bought the Paradise Lodge in Balsam Lake) & we had a boat exactly like that, only with a 40 Merc. First boat I ever drove. Thought I was king of the world!

Re: Boat Maintenance SHT

Those old trihull designs seemed to dominate the late 60s and early 70s, for sure, especially for boats around and under 16'. It's a good all-around design, I think.<br /><br />They plane out very easily, are stable enough to walk around in, and seem to perform pretty well with modest power.<br /><br />They look pretty dated these days, of course, but there are still hundreds and hundreds of them out there on the lakes. I always see others when I'm out.<br /><br />Mines a Glastron, but they all look almost identical to me. Maybe someone like Glastron was making them for others as rebranded boats. <br /><br />Anyhow, thanks for joining the thread.

Hey, Balsam Lake isn't that far off. Is this a fishing lodge there that your dad owns?

Paradise was a supper club right on the lake. Best prime rib in the country. Dad sold in 1996 to the guy who owned "The Payne Reliever" on the East Side of St. Paul. It sold once again to the couple who founded "Heat-n-Glo" indoor fireplaces & turned it into a 5 million dollar restaurant, they call it "Paradise Landing" now. Great place. Easy to find & great food, drink & atmosphere.
