Hi guys,

We're totally new for boats and just starting to look for our first bowrider, and we'd like to try water ski with it.

Now there are 2 boats that we can choose between, and both of them have 3.0 engine and wakeboad towers, Bimini and quick covers. One is "2011 Bayliner 175" ,which was bought by the owner in June of this summer, asking for 18,800$(Is it worthy?), and the other one is "2008 Bayliner F18 flightier" asking 18,000$ and nonnegotiable. The 2011 Bayliner 175 is almost like brand new one but without extended swimming board and no speakers on the wakebaord tower; while the 2008 Bayliner F18's current owner is the second owner who doesn't know how many hours the boat was used, and the Owners Manual is missing. We slightly prefer the size and interior design of the F18, plus there is a pair of speaker on the wakeboard tower; however there is a bit scratching on the side of the boats. We're just looking for our first boat to try if we'll like boating. If finally we dont like it much, we might resell it, or if we really like it, we might also resell it to change a better and bigger one, therefore, in either way, we might resell it the near future anyway.

So now we're quite confused to choose which one? Anyone could give us some advices and tips? Which one do you think is more worthy to buy? Thank you very much in advance.

PS. There is a 2006 Fourwinns 180 with wakeboard tower at 18,500$ , which could be a candidate too.

If youre dropping $18,500 keep looking. You can get a used boat which is bigger, more beam, more powerful engine and cost thousands less than what you are looking at. The 175 is a very popular boat but in my opinion way overpriced as new. New boats right now are riduculously expensive. That same boat which is 3,4,5 years old will cost you 8 grand less. Keep looking

Can't really comment about the two boats you listed BUT if you plan on skiing, I would make certain that the boat you chose has at least (1) adequate power and (2) a swim platform. In my opinion, an extended platform is one of the best things to have on any boat used for water sports. Easy in, easy out, area to dry off before getting into cockpit and ADDS quite a bit of room to the boat while at anchor. Good luck.

Thank you very much for your reply. We're from Quebec. Here in Canada boat is more expensive than in USA, I guess, and there are not many choices. Now it's just at the end of the season. Everybody is going to store their boats in Garage soon. I also wonder if now it's the moment to buy a boat or better to wait till next spring?

Thanks a lot for your reply! We also think an extended swimming platform is really necessary. I just wonder if it is possible to add an extended platform for Bayliner 175? and around how much it could coat to add one?

Btw, we also saw a Chaparral SSI 18 2008 with bimini, but without wakeboard board. The owner asked for 25,000$, is that overpriced?

hi bud.....welcome to iboats.....
im from the there side of the prairies.
i have to agree with keep looking. tho i like the new bayliners....i must say.....i think you will wish you had at least 19 feet after just a few weeks with the new (to you) boat.
at 19 feet......you will have two choices with motors........the v6 4.3 or the 350 5.7 v8....(possibly a 305 5l but they are more rare)
every one here screams......buy the bigger motor....you wont regret it. so that is your call.

if i were you....i would wait till december...(with cash in hand) and go south of the boarder for your boat.....(dont know where you are.....but im guessing you are close to the boarder) if you watch craigs list.....you are looking for a garage kept fresh water boat with trim tabs....with that budget....you can go right up to an 10 or even 11 (in years) .
make sure the owner has all the recipts....titles....(you actually want him to bring out a file folder) dont forget......the pst at the boarder will cost....so be ready for that.

i drove to vegas to get a boat.....cost 2200 landed......i sold it after 3 seasons for 7800. (with diy repairs)

stay away from any craigs list add that says.....send a cheque and we will ship it to you.........unless you can touch ......feel .....test drive the boat.....dont buy it.

now.....having said that.......i can build you a boat and ship it to you......it will be cheap......but that is a totally different process.

cheers

Check out swimplatforms.com. A number of members here have gotten platforms from them and they are top notch. Not cheap though! I think they are like $1000.

It's tough for us to comment on your pricing because your area prices are so much higher than ours. They all seem exorbitant to me. If you're planning on doing a lot of watersports frequently with a number of other passengers in the boat, you may want to spring for a boat with the 4.3 V6. A Chaparral is a much higher end boat than a Bayliner.

Which Chapparal is the SSI? Is it the 190SSI? Which engine does it have...they offered up to 270hp v8 on that model. I wasn't going to comment but completely unexpectedly you brought up Chaparral. The Bayliner and the Chaparral aren't in the same ballpark in any respect so I think we need to narrow down your expectations a bit. In addition to the Chaparral in my sig (it is a 190SSI) I have a Bayliner bowrider. The Chaparral is a serious boaters boat not necessarily a great beginners boat if you are just getting your seamanship figured out.

Hi, thank you so much for your useful info!!! We're just starting to looking for a boat a few weeks ago, so our knowledge about boat is almost 0! Plus my husband just speak little English, and there is not many info of boat in French. Even for me English is my third language. I'm not really sure what you mean about "you can go right up to an 10 or even 11 (in years)"? Do you mean suggesting us to buy a 10-11 years old boat? and what do you mean to make sure the owner has titles? What is the "title"? Thanks again!

Yes, it's the SSI, and it's 18 feet. We just saw the boat a few days ago, and the engine is 3.0L Btw, what's your opinion about "Rinker Captiva 212 2005" with Engine 5.0L, asking 24,000 with Bimini, but no wakeboard? Thanks.

Sorry, I just forgot asking how they'll charge the PST at the boarder? How do they know the price of the second hand boat? and how can I prove the boat is belonging to me?

Moreover, when I bring the boat back to Canada, how will I get the permit of the boat and complete the document stuff? Thanks a lot for your answers!

No way would I pay that much money for anything that says Bayliner on it. Possibly the worst boat made in recent decades and poor resale and equally poor quality and reputation. The amount of money you have to spend, 18,500 dollars, spend it wisely, on something other than a Bayliner.

Ok that is not the 190SSI, that is the 180. There is a big difference between the 180 and 190. The 180 is the ultra, entry level boat while the 190 although the same size is a munumental move up all around. Don't get sucked into a 180 because it has the name Chaparral on it. The 190 isn't terribly much more used considering how much more boat you get. As for the Rinker, they are a nice mid level boat but seems to be the most robust model you have suggested. That boat will require some additional towing capacity and storage space over the others too.

Thanks for your input. Mostly we've already given up the Bayliner...

Thanks again for your reply! Now we're more focusing on the "Rinker Captiva 212", which is 21" long, much bigger than the 17-"18" ones, and more space with a huge extended platform that's also what we love. The only problem is that the boat missed a wake board tower, cause we'd like to play wakeboard. I'm wondering if it's possible to add a wakeboard tower on this model(2005, is it too old as a bowride?), and around how much it could cost? Many thanks!

Yes you can add a wakeboard tower to any bowrider. The cost will depend on the tower you choose. Much like anything else, they do have different levels of quality and materials which affects the price. Call around your local boat dealerships and see what they charge.

If this is your first boat, you are going to get scratches on it. You might not feel as bad when you get another one. Just saying....
