Re: Boat Prop Repair

Aluminum props are cast and a tig welder does not necessarily mean a good solid repair--welds frequently do break out under subsequent light hits. But back: You need to take the best blade and repair it, then shape it as closely as possible to original. Then you need to make a template of this shape to shape the other blades. Finally, you need to make a pitch block to hammer all three blades to the same pitch. WAY WAY easier to send it out for repair, but a lot of shops will do a mediocre job resulting in dissatisfaction and the desire to do it yourself.

Profile,location??
You might be close to someone who can help???
In Md. There is a prop place in Essex, called Millers Island Prop.
In Mi. Marysville ,Prop is a great place.
In Alaska, not sure?? :)
Or just take it to your local dealer and they will have a place they send them to.
Fixing it yourself will keep you occupied for a while, but will probably end up at the shop.
Some damage can't be fixed??

Trying to do it your self is an exercise in futility. Bring it to your local boat yard and have them send it out to be properly refurbished or just get a new one if the damage is beyond repair. Fortunately, it's not a real big ticket item.

Re: Boat Prop Repair

Over where i live which is in indiana the three places i asked about price all were in the 150$ range and some said my prop was to bad to fix, which is crap because years back my dad sent in some awful ones. 4043 tig filler rod is cheap. I have already fixed one prop for my chrysler by torch welding it, which is a challenge but is really the best way because the welds are not brittle like a tig weld will be. I gained an extra 3 mph and a decrease in vibration. I am self sufficient person and i am not a fan of just sending it off, i take pride in fixing stuff myself. So how could i make a pitch block? would a simple paper pattern work???

A paper pattern would only give you the shape of the prop. Making a pitch block takes some fairly sophisticated tooling equipment. See below link:

You probably can't; not without the proper pitch block.

Good luck with your project.
