OMG I would have paid to see that... I have however seen a guy come close to losing his SUV in the drink but he saved it in time

Re: Boat Ramp Submerged Debris- What are my rights?

MW001 how about this one: in Connecticut we have a state ramp that for years had a "sometimes marked" rock about 100 feet out from the ramp. The top of the rock was plated with aluminum and fiberglass. Sometimes it had a buoy on it and sometimes it didn't. Even with the buoy there, it often wasn't on the rock. Most people found it the "hard" way, bang, bang, bang, bang. It was supposed to have been removed within the last couple of years, and I didn't see it last time I went there, but then I didn't see it once when I had just put on a new prop either. Anyway, that ramp has been home to a lot of boating equipment over the years, including one of the brand new rollers I just put on my trailer two weeks ago, the first time that roller was used. I got so frustrated I came home and put on one of the old ones I just took off so I could go fishing again.
Hope you enjoy the forum here, even if you don't always get the answer you're looking for it's usually entertaining. Good luck with your boat, and if you need a prop check out Ebay.

Re: Boat Ramp Submerged Debris- What are my rights?

I read nuemans original post to the One Woman Iboats Widow Brigade ...

I couldnt even read that damned part about marooning the anchor on dry land cause anchors love water,I just kept laughing, and she loved the part about contacting the relatives, and she asked about my post when I got broken down with Bob, and all the damned bananas and such in the water, I swear, like a floating fruit salad, huge, HUGE DelMonte ship right in the slip...

that was priceless, brilliant, I feel bad for mw feeling like we were collectively dissing him and his new baby takin a hit,

(and not for nothing, but for ten bucks with all the boating fees and liscences, hmmmph, I would sue just on principal, if they are going to CHARGE they SHOULD clean the joint up, at least bi weekly, they can have a goon collecting money every day, make him clear out the ramp with a rake as high as chest waders can get him)

but I think by now mw knows we are on his side, but sometimes, well, what can ya do, you have take it on the chin, its not worth the hassle

and those legislative bastages know it!

hey i think you have a valid point & by almeans it doesnt hurt to sea if you can find someone to take responsibility.
hell if you were cruising down the water way and a piece of trash flew off your boat as the cg or dnr was passing they would most likely fine you & hold you responsible for littering.
it doesnt hurt to try! good luck

Unless that anchor was floating yo were on the bottom anyways and could have hit anything else down there. S*it happens and you found a submerged object. It won't be your last.

mabbott, thats a roger-40-10 on that...........if I had a dime for every stump, treelimb, rock..or was it an anchor???....anyway. Who cares??? If you're gonna float with an engine, you're gonna trash some props...it just goes with the territory!!!

I know it wont make you feel any better but a few years back we put a race boat in at a public ramp to do some testing. Well the boats in the water and all warmed up, Put her in reverse -- backed up 20 feet (motor still tilted pretty far up) and BAM! Hit a concrete "rock" that, as it turned out, the county knew was there. "Haven't had time to move it!" they said. So much for that $800.00 prop.

About 2 years later a buddy was putting his 24' Skater in the water at a different county ramp and BAM! Same deal. Only he ruined 2 $800.00 props.

This guy owned a excavating company so he went and got a back hoe and got the concrete "rock" out. Believe it or not, a county worker tried to stop him from removing it. Everything you can imagine he said was only about half of what he told the county guy.

Hey Dude...Look on the bright side. That was a good lesson on why you always carry a spare prop and it happened in a less than hostile place.

Here's something that happened to my dad about a week after he bought a new boat. Late 1950s and he bought a 27' Chris bullnose cruiser with twin 105 inboards. We were casually idling along in a marked channel. The water was murky and you couldn't see 2 feet down. We hit a dredge pipe that was submerged and bent both prop shafts and almost sunk the boat. After swimming around we discovered the pipe and it was left in the middle of the channel that day by the city dredge crew without markers, flags or anything. My dad was pixxed and called the city...they happily offered to replace and repair everything because it was their crew that did it. The place and city?...Banana River at Cocoa Beach, Florida.

Re: Boat Ramp Submerged Debris- What are my rights?

I'm relatively new to the boating world, and I think I would feel the same way if I launched a brand bew boat for the first time and something like that happened. I believe the only reason it HASN'T happened to me is that I have never had a brand new boat.

Anyway, I'ver noticed that anchors aren't exactly cheap! I don't know the value of the one you salvaged, but maybe it's not that much less than $150. It may not be a deal you'd wanna make again, but I've made worse trades! :(

I think BOMBING the anchor would be better.
That way you don't have to worry about anyone hitting it and plus you make bigger launch ramp in the process. :D

Re: Boat Ramp Submerged Debris- What are my rights?

The number of new props purchased each year is inversely proportional to the number of years of boating experience...I don't think for a minute that someone intentionally left an anchor on the ramp to ruin someones day. The incident does bring to light some things that we all know are the right things to do...but usually get overlooked. Like checking water depth, clearance before proceeding, running the blower for 3 minutes, etc, etc. ...it happens. Sorry to hear about the damage.

Re: Boat Ramp Submerged Debris- What are my rights?

Hey, does anyone know the statute of limitations on prop damage caused by a submerged object?
I boat on state lakes and every prop I've trashed was due to a submerged object (ok, except one, which was a road-bed that emerged when they let too much water out of the dam...err, darn). I figure the state could pay me for the 6+ props I've ruined over my boating career. Whaddya think?
Brian

PS, I am JUST KIDDING!! Don't mean to rub salt in anyone's wounds... heck, we've all hit something at one time or another; some more than others, I'm sure!

come to think of it, when they make these big impounds like Hopatcong, dont the usually drown small dead towns in the process? I wonder what would happen if the water level dropped to the point where you could hit a church spire or water tower or something, hmmmmmm .....

just a thought!

:D
