hey yall !! new to using forums so bear with me. came across 88" stratos 1700 xl with 3.0 cobra. the owner had about 1500.00 on motor repairs including supposedly repaired exhaust. he took out on river said ran really well till he noticed water ????. exhaust manifold was not fixed. brought it home parked it ,frustrated he let it sit for couple yrs. gave it to to haul off. found exhaust manifold used for 150.00.i think it will still run. gonna check it out first. if it runs gotta redo deck & stringers also redo upholstery. can do deck and stringers myself. here I go . sounds like decent project . thanks again for hearing me out and thanks for letting me get acquainted with everyone. be talkin at ya

Re: boat restoration

Welcome to iBoats. Since you are planning to go full in, give the transom a good check while you are at it. You don't want to do all of that on a weak transom only to redo it again soon after. Good luck with your project

Re: boat restoration

Welcome to iboats :welcome: great to have you aboard...

Not sure what level of experience you have or even what level you want to restore your boat to either. But I can assure you, you have a lot of work ahead of you... However, with that stated, you came to the right place for help, knowledge, and ideas on how to proceed. Post your ideas of what you want to accomplish and your plan of attach for everybody to read and provide response too... Does the boat have a solid transom, how about the flooring or any other wood built structure(s)? Those things will be your first priorities... Is the engine working, how long has it been since the last impellor change, or the carbs rebuilt? Are the fuel lines old, and what does the wiring look like... So many things to be concerned with... But post your ideas and thoughts.... :)

Re: boat restoration

Those are actually your "lesser" evils, the greater evils will be under your carpet (decking) and under your decking (stringers and floatation foam).

Don't worry about the cosmetic upholstery and paint until after you've dug into the below deck area and exorcised the rot and saturation demons.

Re: boat restoration

You have three threads going with the same topic. Please combine them all into one so people do not get confused.

Re: boat restoration

been in remodeling and carpentry for 38 yrs. have watched a video diary of redoing stringers, foam work, decking, using resins & fiberglas repairs. have done some of these repairs to some extent in my business. but this one will need a lot of work and help !!!! floor gone and stringers. the only solid piece so far is transom so far. I got boat free from brother in law. iwas on river running great before being parked , a lot of new motor parts. (2 1/2 yrs ) I will know by tomorrow if it will run , got my fingers crossed. ive built, repaired & remodeled a lot of stuff, this my first boat, I have always said if I cant fix it , it aint broke. cant wait to get started. still trying to get everything in one thread, if yu can help , this will be my fisrt project. website for above mentioned videos , Blogger: User Profile: FriscoBoater

Re: boat restoration

the white part of paint is in great shape I think it can be cleaned buffe and polished, really best part of boat. clearcoat is flaking off of red. thinking of doing interior with wood and putting some type of clear resin or marine varnish of some type. will finish both sides and edges as well. since woodworking is what I do best. probably a lot of maintenance but it will look gud. of course yu know plans always changes. well off to start stripping interior ???

Re: boat restoration

Hi and welcome,
Not very computer savvy myself, but we'll try to get you going in the right direction...

What search engine {Google, Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc...} are you using?

To combine all of your threads into one...look at the BLUE bar across the top that starts out with "Private Messages"...
Look across until you get to "Quick Links▼" and click on the little black downward pointing arrow...
You will get 5 choices, click on the "Moderators"...a list of the websites moderators will come up...on the right to their screen names is a box that says "Send PM"...Pick one of the 'mods'
Click on "Send PM" that and send them a message that you would like your threads joined into one...
At the bottom of your PM is a "Submit Message" box...Click on that and your message will be sent to the chosen mod...
Within a day or two they will take care of fixing that...

All this computer stuff takes a while and some practice to get to know and become comfortable with, but with time and use it gets easier, just like swinging a hammer...after a while you stop hitting your fingers more than the nails...:D

Like most things in life it is also a constant learning experience, the more you do it the more you realize how little you know...

Best regards,
GT1M

Re: boat restoration

If your stringers are gone, there is a decent chance that your transom will be gone as well.

Re: boat restoration

For the record akatheray just post within your original thread, you can view your profile as well and see which threads you have created, but even said so you can always go into the main forum under that category find yours and just reply to that thread with updates! That will help once they combine all the threads to one. So yes GT1000000 nailed it on the $. Just follow his directions and you will be gtg.

Btw looking forward to this thread you boat looks like its gonna need some extensive over hauling but I will join in and soon find out!

Re: boat restoration

Is that a Stratos? Looks like maybe late 80's, early 90's? That is going to be a great looking boat when you are done. As many here have said, welcome to dry dock!
