I have a 1976 70 hp Johnson with no boat. I already have a fishing boat and I am looking for suggestions for a pleasure boat that would be a nice partner for my 70 hp johnson outboard...I am looking for something older and don't mind light restoring work.

Re: Boat suggestions?

I have a 70 on a 17' Key West and it does great; they are also a good match for the 17' whaler. However, both of these are relatively flat bottom/low deadrise (the KW is a "bay boat" hull). You would be pushing it if you got a deep V or one with a lot of build-in's inside, adding weight--like the typical bow rider with back to back seats, etc. Talking fiberglass.

B/c aluminum boats are lighter, you can push a bigger boat with it, but I defer to the tinnies about a good match. Also less to the restoration (not that a whaler would need any).

Would be on lakes with lots of room for water sports activities and would like to be able to do a little skiing but mostly tubeing and just cruising around.

Re: Boat suggestions?

how about an old 16-18" tri-hull? cheap to buy

^^^^ Great Idea ^^^^

I'm a big fan of try-hulls, especially on inland lakes. They're a very stable boat for cruising or swimming off of, and will put down a nice table to ski or tube behind. You should be able to find a pretty decent one inexpensively, and maybe even have a reserve outboard out of it.

I had a 70 Yamaha 2, stroke on a 16' Starcraft semi v I guess you would call it. It did 43mph, and I fished with it in the Texas gulf, Fla gulf, Atlantic, Chesapeake , and in many inland lakes, and rivers. There was no room to hardly take a step though. My buddy had a 70, on a Carolina skiff that was great when it was flat, and plenty of room but in a good chop it would rattle your fillings loose.

A 16' aluminum Starcraft would be ideal!

Re: Boat suggestions?

What are some brands or examples of tri-hulls?

I wouldn't worry about brand. Tri-hulls were a dime a dozen in the 70's and 80's. Worry about condition. The aluminum boats aren't a bad suggestion either, but I've always leaned toward the tri-hulls. I had a 70HP on a 15' and it would actually pull three skiers with 2 people on board, and run about 30MPH with no skiers but 5 people inside.

What's on Craigslist around you? That's going to really be the driving factor for you: what's available.

Re: Boat suggestions?

Been doing some looking around for the older 70's model Starcraft Capri Tri-Hull...I really like those and wouldn't mind restoring one. So, I guess I am officially in the market for one...a really cheap one at that.

Starcraft made fiberglass and aluminum hulls. Any tri-hull will be fiberglass.

I used to lose races to one of those when I was in my teens. It was a gold colored one and with the same HP on the back it would clean my clock every run.

... and? :D (just stoking the fire)

I still have my dad's 15' Newman tri-hull with a Johnson 70. It has gone through scores of nephews, nieces and their kids over the last several decades and still runs like a bat outa . . . Seats 4 - 6 comfortably and we still pull kids with a 6' tube. For small lakes, a very good choice.
