If anybody has access to a Chaparral 196, I would greatly appreciate a meaurement from prop to trailer hitch, And windshield height on a trailer. The more i drool over boats the more I want one but I am going to keep mine in the garage when not in use, I just saw my buddies 1 year old monterey 236fs with a wake tower, and it honestly looks terrible from being outside all the time because of nowhere to put that monster. So I decided to quit looking for a huge 14 passenger barge and get realistic. Btw I have 24ft deep garage and still walk around the rear but i think 25.5 is doable. Thanks for the help.

You can also add a tongue hinge kit which shortens the tongue on the trailer, I have heard very good reviews on these.

Now that is the best idea I have heard all day, thanks. Now i might be able to move up closer to the 216 like I wanted but I still need Height, I think that will be my limiting factor. A 1981 wellcraft 160 fits under it barely...

Re: Boat vs Garage

There are ways to deal with that though, Lowering the trailer, smaller tires, a few things but here's one thing to think about, I'm not sure where your located, but I keep my boat outside during the boating season and it stays clean inside and out, I do use my mooring cover along with cockpit and bow covers so its double covered so to speak. Sometimes when you have a small garage like I do you have to think outside the box!! I Don't own anything besides atv's that fit in my double garage, One ton Dodge cummins...nope, Boat....nope, Camper....nope. Wish I had more money.... I need a bigger garage my toys are too big...

My mom and dad have a very nice sized garage but they didn't like coming home from their winter to a 25' Crownline in their garage even though it was a perfect fit!!

When we bought our new house it all mattered on if the boat would fit in the garage( my baby don't stay in the weather:D)... It just barely goes.. I measured it, before home purchase.. Kinda wild get it in...back up into the middle.and push it over sideways once in there.. It is super snug(can still do outdrive work if needed).. Matter fact.. It won't go with the center windshield open.. Seems like they just didn't build garages for boats.. Hence the folding trailer tongues and such

When I was a kid, we couldn't have a boat because we only had a one car garage and Dad wouldn't park the car outside. When I grew up I didn't get a boat until I had the garage first. When I built my new house, I built the garage to fit the new boat we were planning to buy.......not just the boat, but the car attached to the boatas well!

Just the way I was raised I guess.

Oh, did I mention that the boat is now 27 years old and looks like new. I had to get an appraisal for my agreed insurance value and it was valued at more than I paid for it. So I guess the garage has value after all.

Re: Boat vs Garage

If this boat needs to go through a single wide door, you had better be more concerned about width than height. While single garage doors are typically 9 feet wide, many boats and trailers today are 8 foot 6. While that may seem like you have 3 inches clearance on each side, that is not the case. The framing around the door takes up that space. An 8-1/2 footer will not fit. If you will be using a double door its is not an issue. Windshield height may also be an issue. You can however, uncouple the trailer, lower the tongue jack as far as it will go and then push the boat in. Even then however, that may not provide enough clearance.

A buddy of mine deflates his tires to the point where his boat clears. When he pulls it out he fills them up with his air compressor. Just a thought if the height is cutting it that close.

The garage is 3 1/2 car garage, one big door and one small one, they guy that built this house wasn't a boater but an MG car restorer, so height was not an issue with him lol. A Duramax with 265's will clear the onstar antenna if you push up the door a little as you go under.

A confession. Every time I get my garage anywhere near that clean my family is kind enough to fill it back up with BS! If we don't have enough crap to fill it up, they offer to let friends store their stuff (that they don't want) in our garage.

Ok I have a Chaparral 183 SS which is 18'3" without a swim platform and 19'11" with a platform. Our entire selection process was based on what would fit in the garage. Our garage is 24 feet deep (90% sure on the depth) and the Chap (without a platform because it wouldn't fit) fits with the tounge swung, and the drive down with about an inch to spare.

Thanks for the Numbers.

Re: Boat vs Garage

Is it legal to keep a garage that clean?

I own a garage with an attached house. Its my "man cave". If it isn't on wheels its not allowed there. I let my lady park her car there, but I don't mess with her kitchem and she don't mess with my grudge!

Very astute observation, since the early '80's can only be distinguished with a view of the grill and tail lights. Yes, he's an '80. "Old Blue" only gets out on weekends to pull the boat. "Grandpa" is a '67 and and he only gets out on cruise nights, and only if its not raining. Both are one-owner cars and both are appraised above sticker price.

Gotta love Pontiacs. Too bad Obama Motors (Govt. Motors, i.e., GM) didn't share the same passion. Sure beats pulling your boat with a pickumuptruck!

The decision to kill Pontiac was was made before the bailout, IIRC.

Makes no sense to me since the stats I read showed they sold more Pontiacs than Buicks. But then again, you can never believe what you read. Regardless, good for me cause it ads to my appreciation. Except, now I have an issue when I have to buy a new car.....LOL. (My daily driver is a Ponch too and its now approaching an odometer rollover)
