I was trying to do a solo launch at the ramp today. It was deserted, I had the ramp to my self but I was still in a hurry(places to go, fish to catch).
I backed in, climbed aboard pist-n-broke, and leaned over the front to release the winch like always. Well, the winch was bound and wouldnt turn. I tried all I could and no movement. About this time I went ahead and jumped in the ankle deep water and proceded to screw with it, to no avail. It was stuck tight. In desperation I leaned over and gave the boat a mighty shove, at which point the stuck whinch gave up smashing the flying handle into the bridge of my nose. I was compleatly stunned and just sat down, in the river. About three miniutes later I decided that I was bleeding pretty bad, so I grabbed a rag from the boat, re-winched the boat, and drove to the ER.
So, here I sit, 14 stiches later looking like I got in a bar fight and still no fish. Hey, it was still better than bein' at work:D

I've come close but usually when I'm pulling the starp to make some slack. That must have really hurt.

He is very lucky this time as the handle would have broken his hand and with no-one around to help him. I will keep this in mind whenever I launch my boat to be very careful with the winch.

Buddy I must say that you have made my day.
That sounds like something I would do.
Better luck next time.
14 stitches is a fairly large cut.
Impressive

No powered winch yet, but I did throw that rusty piece of crap away and put a shiny new hand winch on. It has yet to stick(so far). as for the cut, chicks dig scars right?

Re: Boat winch kicked my.....

man, that musta hurt. my condolences.
had me a plain ol winch on my boat too. where the handle turns realin it in or out. kinda a light duty winch at that. i've been whapped on the wrist by that sucker once, and once was to many times for me. i took the winch i had off my other boat that needs restoreing. very cool difference. it's a shelby 5470. kinda old and don't think they have that model anymore though. anyways, it's 2800# + has neutral, where the handle don't spin, it freewheels. very nice feature w/ a brake. aslo has 2 speeds fwd & rev. man what a difference.
a side note. shelby replaced a part on my old winch via a phone call to them from me. verbal discription of my part i needed and they sent it to me 3 days later, no charge. i thought that was standing behind yer product pretty good. i bet the winch is 30 years old......
