You worst nightmare, thats a grenaded ring and pinion set and will reguire the works, lower is more than likely ok yet if you stopped soon reakizing the problem , but the longer you proccedded the chanced get slim of lowers surviving through the metal shavings,

Looks like it was run with no oil or oil that was low. Had you checked that lately?

Or I guess the other question might be.........Did someone "change" the drive oil recently?

I also would not bolt a good upper to your "lower" without taking it apart and inspecting well enough to ENSURE there are no metal chips in the lower.....

I hope that when I have a boat for 4 to 5 years from now I will know has much as you all do.
I'll be the first to say that not only am I NOT an expert but I have as much to learn as the rest of you!!:D We're all in this together!!!! AND I'm NO english major either!!!

Ouch those pictures hurt.... Made my skin crawl and I went to check my own oil:redface:

It's so tough to find a used outdrive for the 4.3... Most boats that coulda had em the folks who bought em got a 3.0 instead.. Dang it... I know..

Your boat would be a good candidate to stick on a sei drive... At the price of what used Cobra drives go.. The SEI looks pretty tasty...

Hope ya find ya a replacement soon.. Good luck...

BTW.. I have likely the worst spelling and punctuation on here.. I just got a bit confused for a sec.. Your pictures helped shed the light...

That's a good price (I just got one for $1k) - maybe too good.

You need to ask what the gear ratio is and then compare that to the stated upper unit gear ratio in your operators manual. You should also inquire as to what "recently serviced by a marine technician" actually means. Did they pressure test it, or did they just pull it off of a working boat and are assuming that it is good?

Also, this eBay user has very little feedback (12) for four years of activity. That always frightens me.

I'm not shilling for them or anything, but I just had a great experience purchasing a used, tested, and warrantied Cobra upper from these guys: http://stores.ebay.com/Boat-Motor-Recyclers-inc?_trksid=p4340.l2563 - you could do worse than give them a look.

Good luck - a toasted upper is no fun, but you can recover from it. I went from "why won't my boat go?" to "I fixed it myself" in just one weeks time. If you don't have one, get a genuine OMC service manual (check eBay) and use it - it will save your bacon.

here is the one I found on Ebay. Let me know what yall think. I really dont have the money to buy a complete new unit. Beach vacation coming up.

Well someone thought it was a great deal cause they nabbed it... 4.3 is tough to find huh? Have you tried CL? You might get lucky.. Post what you are looking for with pictures... I had a guy email me today that he had a complete 350 and yamaha outdrive:facepalm::eek: for $900.. I am always hunting extra parts..

If I was going to pay up to $1000 for a used drive, I think I would do the SEI instead. The kit would be more money though because you have to buy the drive AND the Cobra install kit.

I am not sure I would just bolt a "new" upper on that lower until I was satisfied all the metal parts were thoroughly washed.....and that would mean dis-assembly.

BTW.. I have likely the worst spelling and punctuation on here..

Just an aside.......if you're using Firefox, it spell-checks as you type. I am not using Microshaft Windblows but I think Firefox will do it on any operating system it's used on.....

I use it... Sometimes I forget to click it on..

It's a dab over 2k to go with a SEI drive... That's shipped and all the kits needed.. Not real real bad since they have a warranty..

Make sure you know how to fill it with lube properly. You don't fill it ftom the bottom like a Merc. You fill it from the middle.

Re: Boat want GO. Need help, advise, anything

I just had what sounds like a similar problem with my 1990 Four Winns 180 Horizon with 4.3 cobra, put it in the water for the first time this year and made it about halfway around the lake and it stalled. I got it restarted and when I put it into gear it makes a loud clanking sound that shakes the whole boat and the engine stalls. I pulled it out of the water and brought her home, although I havent put a wrench to her to start inspecting it, but I do know I filled the oil from the bottom plug last year. Sounds like I may be in the same boat as you, does this sound like i have the same problem? Thanks for any advice.

well kinda, mine started up fine. but, when I put it in gear, the engine would work and sound like normal. My boat never shook. it reved up and just did nothing.
The first and easiest thing to check is to, put in gear (out of water and not running ofcourse) see if you can turn the prop by hand. It should be hard to turn or not turn at all. If it does turn then most likely it is bearing or shaft issue. Good luck.

First thing I would do is check the level of your drive oil. The drive oil level should be checked EVERY time you take the boat out!

Re: Boat won't GO. Need help, advise, anything

Alright, I checked the oil and it showed nothing. So I took the plate off of the top of the drive and still found no oil, but I did find a bunch of metal shavings. The teeth on the gears in the upper appear to be intact, so I am not sure where the metal shavings are from. I did put it in gear and I was able to turn the prop by hand, but it did take some muscle to turn it. Any suggestions of what to do next?

Well....sorry to say, you destroyed your drive by filling it wrong....

You'll be replacing or rebuilding the drive.
