Re: Boating Movies

Thanks for all the great titles. I have a nice of list of movies I've only seen once and am eager to watch again, and some that I have never seen.

Re: Boating Movies

just thought of another one, that is if ya consider a submarine a boat...
Das Boot. nothing like watching 3-hours of German U-boat action to make one feel claustrophobic :D

"Captain Ron. Least I think that is what it is called."

Yup, Captain Ron... pretty good family entertainment.

Dang, yall beat me on the fly, was gonna put Das Boote, and U-571 (thought it was 581:confused: I could be wrong though) on the list too.

Wasn't real crazy about The Hunt For Red October though. After having read the book, it wasn't all that appealing.

Some great quotes can be pulled out of Captain Ron. I just can't remember the exact wording, or I would throw a few up here too.

Depending on how big a boat you are talking about, there are some great carrier based movies, but I cannot remember the daggum titles though.

African Queen for obvious reasons! If you discount Bogey and Hepburnthen there is the background os steam!

How about the pirate movies of Flynn or O'Hare? Captian Ron is a good one indeed, as it shows that a family can have fun on the water, no matter what the circumstances. Here is an oldie, "Huckelberr Finn". It is for us landlocked types.

The Hornblower series also qualifies.

The Peoples Broadcasting System has had numerous adventures with Jaques Custodian and others doing what I wish I could do. More power to them and may we all be so blessed to follow.

"The Silent Service" was a good series for those submariners amongst us as was "Sea Hunt".

"The Leviathon" is a good one for those who like scary movies as well as "the Deep"

Then there is "The Old Man and the Sea" and another Mitchner takeoff that I can not remember.

I think also "Adrift" would work for those who want to see a good hardbody in her prime, plus a high quality yacht.

Others are out there easily.

Can anyone guess that I like boat movies?

"Madison" is a movie about a true success story of a guy from Madison Wis. with a winning racing hydroplane.

Re: Boating Movies

Sahara, based on the book by Clive Cussler had a couple real fast, expensive boats, getting used, and even blown up.

If you have read the book, it is not a good movie, but if you watch it with an open mind, ignoring the book, it is a fairly good movie.

Watched On Golden Pond last night for the first time in 20 years or so; awesome! I had forgotten about the wheel mounted throttle . . . No wonder the kid wrecked her

Re: Boating Movies

FYI - "Madison" took place in Madison, Indiana - not Wisconsin. Madison, IN holds an Unlimited Hydro event every summer. The town itself actually owns the "Miss Madison" hydroplane, kinda like how Green Bay owns the Packers... Several of the hydroplanes used in the movie have been displayed and run at our Antique Raceboat Regatta in Clayton, NY. Nothing like a 60-year old 12-cylinder Allison pumping out over 1000 horses screaming down the River... and making the rich kids in their Cigarette boats wet their pants.

I remembered Sahara on TNT a little late and turned it on just in time to catch the last few minutes of the boat scene. Enjoyed it very much thanks! I had never even heard of this movie though I did read a few of those books. I'll have to rent it now to see the whole thing. :)

A couple of older "Navy" movies I've always liked again and again..."Mr. Roberts" with James Cagney and Henry Fonda and "The Caine Mutiny" with Humphrey Bogart, Jose Ferrer and Fred MacMurray. :D

Re: Boating Movies

For some of us pining away for more boating (especially in the regions that boating season is over) I found this TV show surfing the channels one day a few weeks ago. It's on in my area on sat nights, so I set my DVR to record it.

But even better is that when I was looking for a link so others could find the show I found they have a website for the tv series. They are in their third season. They have done 18 shows in various ports in the Northeast U.S. region.

They have 54 video clips posted (3 video clips for each show) You can view each port.

Check out these clips as it's better than watching a boating movie where you only see a boat briefly. This TV show is a great thing to watch off season too in order to plan your next vacation trip before the new season begins

The boats toured are all Searays so it looks like the show is Searay sponsored. Still cool to see the inside of each boat. I saw one on a 48 foot Searay last week.

This is a great sight for boaters out of the area or the U.S. that would want to visit a certain ports.

Check out the clip that I just watched on Lake George NY, this is where I do a lot of my boating. I also just watched the one on the Thousand Islands NY one ( I did not know this is where Thousand Island salad dressing was invented)

http://www.portocalltv.com/episode.html

Caution . . . watching these clips for us boaters in the off season might bring tears to your eyes, so keep box Kleenex close :D

Or do a search in Google for: port o call tv show if the above link is disabled.

Site might be down right now cause many clips say "coming soon" but (Lake George works) you can also view some on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/portocalltv

Check out the one on Key Largo (has a tour of the Ocean Reef Yaught Club).

Re: Boating Movies

I give another vote for Captain Ron. It was hilarious. I like how he keeps getting lost.

The first time I was on a bigger lake. (Which is also the last time I had my boat out) I forgot where I parked... I mean I had to go looking for the dock where my pickup and trailer was. I kinda knew the general area. But, everything looks different from the water. I even tried to take a compass heading when I left shore. That's not as easy as it looks on TV.

Does Gilligan's Island count? Just Kidding.

What was the name of that move where a husband and wife go sailing only to find a almost empty boat with one person left on board. He turns out to be a crazy and kidnaps the wife leaving the husband on the sinking boat. Eventually the wife tricks him by sleeping with him and rescues her husband. But, he is still on board so they shoot him in the head with a flare gun. Whatever it was called it was a good movie.
