Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

yea, it was a new moon this weekend, so really high tides. I was down in OC this weekend, and the water was over the dock at the boat ramp in west OC at high tide.

The water was not too rough thou. I took the boat about half a mile out on the ocean in 3-4 ft seas.

Caught a sting ray right next to the jetty on assatuge island.

I never knew sting rays were out there. Just threw it back.

Hey Bowman, ever use the Dorsey Park boat Launch at Peach Bottom? I went there today to checkout their ramp, what a nice place.
How do I get charts for the Suskie?

idk about above the dam, but you can get charts for the lower river on activecaptain.com just go to the "x preview" tab

marinas might sell a chart for the upper river, or maybe one was never made. fish finders should have it, if you buy the chip for it.

we're heading down to the Wye or Tred Avon tomorrow for some serious crabbing. My uncle was out on Friday for a couple of hours and got a little better than a bushel. I'll get a license for myself and hopefully we'll get a bushel each.

So is anyone taking their boat to Canal Day this weekend?

you won't be able to get within 5 miles of the harbor. Since you can't anchor in the canal, you would have to anchor out in the NE river. We could start a raft up right at the entrance to the canal, but the harbor where it is will be too packed.

Yeah, no way we are boating over in that mess, we are going to take a car ride over and people watch for awhile.

Don't you mean the Elk river, instead of the NE Bowman?

They're not available as nautical charts; I've looked.
The only thing that might be useful is the 3-map set of the Lower Susquehanna I found at Shanks Mare (just south of Wrightsville). I bought them for kayaking. They don't show depths but do show the dams, launch ramps, parks, and other points of interest.
If we ever meet face-to-face I'll show them to you.

the thing is, when i bought my fish finder, they said the chip i can buy to put in it will give me maps of water depth of thousands of inland lakes, which should include the upper susquhana river.

If the fishfinder/gps chip includes this map (and maybe it does not) why could we not buy it. Why would they make this map for some small lake, and not do it for the river?

My GPS/Chartplotter/Fishfinder stops just north of Garrett island, but covers the whole bay, and east coast.
I wonder if Navionics makes a chip for the Susquehanna?

have fun.. We live 120 miles from the bay area. Will be coming down july 1st thru july5th. Staying on the boat the whole time. One of the joys of having a cabin cruiser..Will be putting in at rogue harbor late evening on the 1st then heading over to the bohemia river to anchor for the night. Hoping to catch a couple of fire works and do some more exploring during the day. Any nice swimming spots? In the upper bay area?
