Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

Thanks, I've been reluctant to put in up there as I don't know the water at all.

It's completely open from Peach Bottom on down to the dam. Above that you need to know where you're going.

Maybe if you got enough speed, and built a ramp...

J/K the damn dam is in the way :D

Did you guys know the original town of Conowingo is underwater, behind the dam?

That is interesting.
I remember several years ago when the drought was really bad you could see the original Susquehanna river bed before Safe Harbor was built.

Where is Safe Harbor? I love the history of this area and the Suskie.

Safe Harbor is up river from Conowingo. It is at the end of Lake Clarke in York PA.

Safe harbor is really amazing. I took a tour of it a few years ago in college. Was one of the neatest things I have ever seen. Walked all around the place. Even got to walk inside of one of the generators that was down for maintenance! Those things are so big we were able to fit 13 of us in there! Evidetnely, Safe Harbor is pretty unique in the fact that if we ever had a complet black out in the US, it is one of only a handful of power plants that could start back up on its own. (All the others need to pull power off of the grid to start thier operations back up.) Anyway, you can tell that I thought it was pretty fascinating!

the only thing i don't like about being above the damn, is that there seems to be a lot of logs floating in the water. But i think the water may be warmer in the summer time than below the damn.

If there is a north wind, above the damn is going to be rougher. South wind, above the damn will be calm, as the damn will stop the wind.

Either way, I'm pretty sure you'd get attention......lot's of it and probably not the kind you'd like.

I hear sirens and see lights......been a while since I read Homer.:D:D
I remember a few years back a dump truck went over right about here,

i went out to glen cove yesterday, and the water was only 45-50 ft deep in the middle, a mile up from the damn. I always thought that water was over 100 ft deep.

Rob and I were talking about the James Michener Novel "Chesapeake" at the raft up. It had been years since I had read it last, but I remembered how much I loved it and ordered it(and 3 other Michener classics on ebay $4.99 :D) and am fully immersed once again.

I just wanted to recommend it to anyone who loves the Chesapeake. It is indeed fiction, but based on a lot of reality.

I know this is a wide open question but, how long is the boating season on the upper Chesapeake?
I am not thinking of wearing a parka?:)
