Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

I plan to be on the water into October, not sure how far though. As for putting in next year, maybe Late March as soon as any freeze threats are gone?

Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

I know this is a wide open question but, how long is the boating season on the upper Chesapeake?
I am not thinking of wearing a parka?:)

It depends.
If you like cruising around (without swimming), we usually have some nice (relatively warm) days thru October. Of course, we could also get a hard freeze by then...
I know fishermen that boat thru December.
I keep my boat in a wet slip and winterize everything (including the motors) by Thanksgiving. If the weather's unusually nice and I decide to take a mid-winter cruise I re-winterize when done.
Hope that answers your question.
I'll tell you this- it's absolutely NO FUN boating in weather like this:

I was thinking of into October depending on temps. I wasn't sure if anything happens at some time. Water gets too choppy, tides do weird things, winds get too bad or whatever. Remember, I am new to boating.

I am with Skargo on this one. I hope to be boating into October and we normally get the boat back out by my birthday, mid April. But depending on what the weather is doing in April I will drain the block and hoses, etc. to make sure I don't have to worry about freezing anything. (I did this year just to be on the safe side.) Wish I had a heated garage to park mine in. Heck, I would take any garage to park it in.

John, are you planning on making a trip down to the bay sometime? It is absolutely a beautiful area to boat in!

My daughter is a senior at U of Delaware and I am hoping to head down to Elk Neck and have her and roommates come for the day. Probably later in September.

Soooo, anyone planning on being out on the bay this weekend?

I am stuck at work all weekend

Might try to get down for one evening after work though. Really want to make a run to Georgetown and grab a bite to eat, haven't been there yet. Maybe I will have to do that on Sunday. I am guessing that it would take 1 hour and 15 minutes or so to run from North East. Anyone know for sure? Also, how crazy would the restaurants be on Sunday evening for dinner?

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Thanks for rubbing it in ;) Hope that you have a great time!

I will let you know our Sunday plans. Need to talk to my wife about it tonight but hoping we can get down there and on the water by 4pm. Probably head straight to Georgetown and grab dinner. Told my dad that we would take him out for Fathers Day and still haven't yet  Not sure if they will be down there yet or not, gotta give them a call too. But you never know, we might just go anchor out and float for a little bit too!

Have fun out there!

Rob and I were talking about the James Michener Novel "Chesapeake" at the raft up. It had been years since I had read it last, but I remembered how much I loved it and ordered it(and 3 other Michener classics on ebay $4.99 :D) and am fully immersed once again.

I just wanted to recommend it to anyone who loves the Chesapeake. It is indeed fiction, but based on a lot of reality.

I just re-read it recently also and I definitely recommend it for anyone who has an interest in historical fiction and the Chesapeake. On a side note, I was on the Bay for the winter of which he writes toward the end of the book and I can attest to his accuracy regarding the cold and the extent to which the bay was frozen solid. The marinas were running around-the-clock shifts of ice cutters to keep the pilings clear. We were riding motorcycles across the Bohemia and out to the mouth.

I'm going to be crabbing on the Tred-Avon all day tomorrow, hopefully with some success.

Sounds like a lot of fun! I really want to get out crabbing but it doesn't sound like it is going to happen until the last weekend of the month :(

Have a great time!

We boat in weather like that in December thru early February (as long as, and if, the water stays soft). Using the boat to go hunting is a special combination of 2 loves!

I plan to be down on Sunday. I need to do some boat and slip maintenance, but will probably bring the Jonboat for a little fishing as well.

I spent 5 hours running around today, no anchoring, just burning fuel! It was beautiful for sure. Ran up the Sass and all around HDG and the Suskie.

We'll be out Sunday all day hopefully.

Same through Tydings a couple times, looks like they are all set up for the seafood festival.

We'll be out then too, we'll try to raise you on 9? It's going to be a hot day, so we're leaving the dog home, and may be up for a trip.

Sounds good, we will be monitoring channel 9 and 16 on the handheld vhf (still trying to install the fixed mount) but should have enough of range to hear you.

Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

Wow.

Blue Crabber, if you're home let us know. I tried raising you through the afternoon.

We got out late. I took my time installing the new antenna. The cable was too short to run it to where the radio was mounted in the cabin, so I moved the radio outside to my helm, I like that better.
I also realized I am not the master "solderist" I think I am, it's a PITA to solder the cable end.
Anyway that, and replacing the stereo in the tow rig, we didn't hit the water till 4pm. Hmmm, temps in the 90's, high humidity, what could happen?

We got the weather alert on our radio, as we were anchored up in Carrot(Cara) cove. We had some fun swimming, and ate some dinner. The alert came on suggesting we find shelter immediately, so we stowed our gear, pulled anchor and cut across the NE river at Hance pt.
Got just past were everyone anchors at the flats, and come across a smaller bow rider with a 90hp rude on the back, with the cover off. We asked if they were having issues, their steering cable was broken.
I asked if they had a radio, they only had cells. They had a kid and woman with them.

I told them I hadn't towed anyone before, They said they could putt in with the guys steering the boat with their hands. We followed until they started into the Perryville channel. One look upriver told me I wasn't taking my boat up there, we wished them luck and turned around and booked into Tydings and hid out at the launch ramp for a half hour or so until that mean little storm headed SE.

That storm had mean looking clouds, lightening, a good amount of rain, and friggin wind. The water was flat, then whitecapped in a moment!

Scared my wife, but I never got stressed.

These photos do it no justice, and when it really looked cool we were busy LOL.

Hiding behind Arks and his neighbors boats, not a bad place to hide from a storm heading SE
