Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

Bill,
Thanks for stopping by the dock @ Fairlee, it was great to meet you Saturday. We'll have to try and hook up one weekend when you have the kids with you. I'll load up my crew and head north to make the whole "Turkey Point" thing more manageable for you guys. And if you ever get to Still Pond, look for our usual raft-up and feel free to join in. They're a great bunch of boaters.

Joe

Joe,
Thanks again for the refreshment and the info about stillpond. I made it out again yesterday(Before,During, After the storms) with just the wife. The bay was so calm around 4pm that we took a run to stillpond, about 25 minutes at 33-35MPH. Not a soul there and we hung out for an hour until the skies started to threaten more storms. I think my fear of Turkey point was based on a couple of bad days. I'm sure I will be back when I have a more experienced crew.

Wow, there was a tornado warning yesterday evening! I took pics here at home, and it looked like funnel clouds, and it headed to HDG after here around 8:30pm.

On another note, we love Stillpond. Did you know that was where women were first given the right to vote?

Hey, I certainly don't blame you for erring on the side of caution... particularly with the kids. But when you do venture south, the invite is always open.

We'll be up your way in a few weeks. My parents are in town and we're planning a mini vacation w/ the kids around their stay. Any suggestions from your experience would be greatly appreciated:

Thursday
  • Great Oak Landing
Friday
  • Cruise North for lunch at Nauti Goose
  • Shopping in NE
  • Dinner at Rivershack
  • Cruise back to GOL
Saturday
  • Still Pond all day
Sunday
  • Baltimore Inner Harbour
  • 1:35 Orioles Game
  • Overnight at IHMC (dinner?? maybe Rusty Scupper??)
Monday
  • Baltimore Aquarium
  • 2nd night at IHMC (dinner??)
Tuesday
  • Cruise over to Rock Hall for lunch at Waterman's
  • Back to GOL

Mom's not much of a water bug, so there's a bunch of land events planned. I just get my boating fix, getting from place to place.:D

I was loaded (the boat on the trailer) by 8 and headed up 95. It looked bad as we were cleaning it up and getting ready.

Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

does someone here own a red boat named Donzi?
I don't know if that is the make of the boat, or a name.
I saw it yesterday parked at otter point on the bush river.

Donzi is actually a manufacture of boats. There are about 3 of them at the dock I launch at. I believe they are mainly aa off shore perfomance style" boat" manufacture if I am noy mistaken.

Donzi makes fishing boats and performance style boats. They used to make cruisers too, not sure if they still do. They are know for their nasty "go-fast" boats though!

I didn't know that they made the other styles as well. I only ever see the "go-fast" ones. Interesting.

We are down on the Potamoc River for the week in a little cottage right on the water. Will launch the boat tomorrow morning and use the mooring right in front of the cottage for the week. Ah, life is good.

Still hoping to make a trip into D.C. by boat, will just wait and see what happens.

I heard that someone drowned in the river off Havre De Grace saturday night. That was the same night I had my boat out for the night.
I did see a coast guard boat near the barge on sunday morning. But I never turned on the radio.
around 11 the boat took off and headed into the bay, doing about 60.

I leave my radio on all the time, just to hear what's going on.

What a difference 24 hours can make. This first picture was taken at about 7:00pm on Saturday night as we left Still Pond.

This next few pictures were take at appox. 4:00pm on Sunday afternoon in Fairlee Creek. Beautiful hot day, a quick rain shower with nothing much happening. The sun came back out again, and then about one hour later all hell broke loose, (along with MANY anchor lines). What a mess!!!

Fortunately for us...no, we broke our raft-up pretty quickly and I was one of the boats that didn't have an anchor out. But even if I had, that was one storm I would have pulled it for. There were boats drifting everywhere. I'd rather be mobile in that situation. I saw at least 5 boats floating out of control. There was one smaller fly-bridge that floated into the anchor lines of two huge aft-cabin boats right in front of me...real messy situation. A big contributing factor was the abrupt wind shift. All afternoon the wind and current were going out toward the cut (West) and when this sucker hit, it shifted EVERYTHING 180degrees to the East, and fast. Those with too little scope out, were destine to break loose, and the sheer force of the wind would have made it impossible for their anchor to reset. I was always taught to set the scope at 8-10 times the depth...sometimes it feels like overkill on a nice day, but yesterday reinforced for me how quickly a nice day could turn "not so nice" in a hurry.

They were calling for storms yesterday, so at least you had a little warning.

I love my new weather apps on my phone, it backs up my WX on my VHF nicely!

Yea, that's why we decided to stay right in our own marina. We usually head out of Fairlee Creek, but yesterday we decided to stay home....still didn't help..lol

I was in a 5 hour business lunch so we missed boating, or I'm sure we'd have been in it!

You're either a very big eater, or you don't believe in having an all day meeting :D I hope it was profitable.

If I had a 5 hour business lunch, I would have to go right to my anger management seminar.
