Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

Stan-
If the weather this weekend is decent I'll be at HdG (slip #632) or anchored at the Flats or near Sand Island.
I'll be at Havre de Grace on the 3rd, but not before 7PM or so. We stay right at the slip for the fireworks, but I've been known to kayak thru the crowd before it gets dark.....
Describe your boat. My Silverton is named "Winter Dream". Stop by and say hello if you see me. Do you monitor the VHF? What's your boat's name?

Hey Rob, good to hear from you. We'll be at HdG Sat. night if all goes well. My boat is a black and grey Wellcraft Nova III about 28 feet long. I do monitor the VHF, just tell me what channel you want to be on. The boat is named "Katie M." If we get out early, we could maybe catch you at Sand Island.

Stan-
The fireworks in HdG are on Tuesday 7/3, not 6/30. I'll monitor VHF 16 and 68. My kayak is red over white and 17' long. I'll keep an eye out for you on Tuesday. I'm taking the rest of the week off and plan to stay on the boat, so chances are good I'll be on the hook somewhere in the upper Bay. My Silverton is a flybridge convertible.

Yeah, I found out about HdG when I got down there and checked the Mariner and The Nor'easter. The original date I got from Chesapeake Bay magazine which turned out to be wrong. We ran up to Northeast in the boats Tues night. I tried to raise you on 68, but no luck. We were about 50 yards off the red buoys they put out around the fireworks barge, towards the northwest shore. We were going to anchor there for the night, but a nasty storm brewed up and we ran for the Bohemia, but that's a whole other story.

Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

Hope you guys don't mind the thread creep, but I'm looking at boat choices and I need a question answered and I think you might be able to answer it. I live in Calvert County Maryland (west side of the middle Bay) and would be able to boat in the Bay and the Pax River. I have kids (13 YO boy and 12 YO daughter) and I would like for them to do water sports (swimming, tubing, skiing, etc), but I don't know if the sea nettles would prevent us from enjoying these fun things during the summer.

Could you give me idea of how bad the sea nettles are and if there is a way to enjoy the water to the fullest?

Thanks!

In the summer the nettles are bad. If you go in the water the probability that you'll get stung is very high if not guaranteed. The problem is such wide spread that they now release prediction models every Friday showing the places where nettle are most likely to be concentrated.

Probably your best bet would be to run up the Patuxant and see if you can’t get in some fresher water to play in.

Thanks for the quick replies, I appreciate it. This will definitely impact my decision on what boat to get.

My daughter was was stung by a box jelly fish when she was young when we lived in Hawaii. She VIVIDLY remembers that episode! So I have to respect this issue.

Last year was so dry that the salinity of the Bay, and associated rivers, was much higher than normal. There were sea nettles way up the Pax River where I live.

Hey Nova, would be happy to cruise with you on the upper bay. I have sailed that area for many years. Now I powerboat and have wanted to try the Bay again. Don't know where the ramps are yet but i have heard there is one at the end of Rt 295 in Nj that is close to the C&D canal. Also would invite you and others to try the Mullica River about 45 mins south-east of Philia. My boat is still under tarps, should be ready by mid May.

Sounds good to me, larry. Keep in touch when your boat comes out of storage, we'll try to get together.

It's getting to be that time of year, again. Anyone who boats on the Chesapeake bay might want to post their plans up here and see if we can get a raft-up planned for at least one weekend this year!

I'll definitly be out and about in the Bohemia River and at Lloyds Creek. My new engine will be arriving tomorrow. As soon as it's in, I'll be out. If you see a 20ft Wellcraft Eclipse with a bunch of crazy people aboard it's probably me!

I usually keep a cheat sheet in the boat of everyone's names and their boats and I try to keep an eye out for them when on the water. I guess I need to start a fresh one for this year.
On the Bohemia we usually go by the 213 bridge or we go under the bridge over to the fork on the right and drop anchor on the point.
I grew up on the Bohemia and I can tell you..it's really getting grassed-in in the coves. You can't hardly even get in to Veazy's Cove anymore and that used to be THE place to be.
And we NEVER miss the Fourth of July on the Bay. Definitely gotta see the fireworks from the water.

I think I'm open for Memorial weekend. The only problem may be financial because we are going on a week's vacation in mid-June and we may be in saving mode for that.

We are also on the Chesapeake. We are a little further down in Rock Hall on the Eastern Shore. With oly a few exceptions, we are out every weekend. The fuel price might keep us closer to home this year, but we'll still be on the water. Shoot me an email if you are heading my way.

Is Dobbins still "private-keep the off" or has it opened back up again?

I don't have any specific info about the current ownership of Dobbins, but all tidal land in Maryland is public property up to the mean (average) high water line. That means anyone can LAWFULLY walk on any part of a beach that gets wet at high tide.
I've heard that guy put up fencing and signs, and was chasing people off the beach last year- I don't care if he's rich; he's a complete jerk.... Someone needs to teach him a lesson and slap him with a lawsuit.
