Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

After we go to Lloyds creek on Sunday one of my friends wants to go to Cava Cove, Can anyone tell me how far it is from Turkey Point light house. Thanks.

Cara cove is my wife and my favorite place for some reason. I'd say it's about 5 miles or so north of TP. You will pass Red Point on your starboard, you can't miss it, then there's a small cove, then Cara is to starboard.

I also happen to have a short video of Cara too.

Sounds like a good idea to me. I haven't been there yet and am sure I could find it without a problem, however, it is always nice to travel with someone that has been there before.

What time would you like to meet where? I am pretty open. What are you thinking about for food? I will grab some things to share with everyone, just haven't decided yet.

Wherever is good with us, I guess TP would be a good meeting place. We'll bring some lunchmeat and snacks and a lot of drinks.

It's a 330 Sundancer, w/ IO's so it draws about 35". I'm relatively new to the bay, and haven't been too many places. I'm running out of money to replace crap I break, so running aground isn't real high on my priority list right now...lol. We hope to be down to the boat this weekend. (tomorrow will tell) If we're down, we'll definitely try to get up to Lloyd's. It would be nice to meet all of you.

You will be fine getting in and for the first hundred and fifty yards. As you get through the inlet on your staarboard you will have a nice place to back in so you are close to the beach. Check out Skargo's video from a couple of weeks ago and that is right where you want to be. I don't think the drop off is as sharp as at still pond so you won't have the shallow water directly off the stern. The kids might be in 4' right off the swim platform, but it is not too far until it slopes up to the beach. It gets alittle crowded right there because all the big boys want that area. If you go to port coming in you will have to ferry them over to the beach, and you don't have as much space over there in front of the dock. Hope everyone has fun, I'm on my way to VA beach for the week, hope to be out on Sunday the 29th.

Will you be able to make it down this weekend Stan?
Planning on coming down Saturday. We should be there around 1 pm. Me, my wife and the 2 1/2 yr old. The older girls are going to a sleepover B-day party with their friends. Was hoping more people were gonna show up...and Scott leaving early is a disappointment as well. :(

Stan,
will you be down Sunday as well? We are planning on coming out all day Sunday.
I'd rather hang with you guys, but this is a family gathering that I'd make waves if we didn't show.

Stan, glad to hear that you are making it down this weekend.

I should be at Lloyd's around 12 to 12:30 or so. Hopefully earlier, but probably not, lol. Looking forward to seeing everyone. I will have the VHF on 16/09 and hail you guys as I come in.

Looking forward to seeing everyone! Sadly, it will just be myself and I won't be down Sunday at all but I am sure you guys will all have a great time!

Hey Guys and Gals. I'm looking to make my first foray in to the upper ches. tomorrow for some tubing and relaxing. We'll be coming up the C&D and in most likely hang out in the Bohemia. By the sounds of it most of you meet over on the West Side of the Bay. I say Cara Cove and Lloyd's Creek mentioned but don't get a hit on google maps. Anyone able to point me in the right direction? I started another thread about the weather as well. That crossing anyone's mind. I have a bimini but don't want to be under it all day.

Thanks and happy boating!

LLoyds Creek is on the same side at Betterton beach. That's at the head of the Sassafras River. If you go down the Elk River Tp will be on your starboard side ,you go a couple of miles down river. There's a big channel bouy= on the port side Usually you will see people diving off of it. Just past that is the mouth of the Sassafras river. Turn left into the channel and go a couple of miles then start turning towards the other side of the river. You will see a big water tower. Go left of that staying on the starboard side of the river. Then look for boats heading into no place. That's the opening of Lloyds Creek,There is a large cliff just passed the opening. Good luck.

Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

Well after the other weeks successful shake down cruise, we were going to try for Lloyds today to meet some of y'all. However, things didn't go as planned. I knew I shouldn't have publicity bragged about how good she did last time out. :D

I launched her around 7:30 Friday evening and took a quick run down to the C&D to make sure everything was good, yep all systems go. Got her back to her slip and tied her up for the evening then the admiral and daughter #2 walked back to the house while I hung the side and rear curtains of the enclosure. After hanging around BS'ing with some of the neighbors on the dock for a while I decided it was time to had back to the house myself. Well when I lifted the engine hatch to turn off the batteries I saw a LOT more water in the bilge than what was in there a couple of hours earlier! Oops, not good!

Ended up pulling her at midnight and parking her in the yard till daylight. First thought was that I didn't tighten the drain plug tight enough...nope nice and tight. Pulled the plug and a couple of gallons ran out. Hmmm, the billows are less than a year old so for then they were rulled out. Then on a whim I took a real close look at the plate that the drain plug threads into. Uh-oh, sealed with regular silicone caulk. Backed the screws out (NOT stainless of course) and as soon as I touched a screwdriver to the edge to pry the plate out, it just fell off!

Grrrrr, dontcha just love POs?

Ran down to Eastern Marine and got what I need to replace everything along with a new tube of 4200. Half an hour later everything was switched out and the caulk was drying. I thought about going out tomorrow, but the weather folks are calling for heavy rain and thunderstorms, so it looks like another week on the trailer for the 'ol gal. :(
