Of course! You just gotta prepare as well as possible and hope it makes it thru unscathed.

Thanks Scott. I should be OK with Brandon's help.
Unless the track changes to the west I'll be leaving the boat in the slip.
If you guys are at Tydings afterward, I'd appreciate a call.
I will try to get down there Sunday night.

Scott - when did you take that pic? Rob & I may still have been there at that time!

Well, Rob and I spent about 4 hours aboard Winter Dream prepping her for the storm. Hopefully she will ride the storm out just fine. If not, it won't be for the lack of trying and prep on Robs behalf. :)

Now, I just hope the rest of the boats that didn't do nearly as much, if any prep work, survive and don't damage any of the other boats!!!

Rob, it was great to see you again today!!! Next time, lets not wait for a hurricane!! :)

Gotta give a HUGE 'Thank You' to Brandon for giving me a hand with storm prep!
We got the canvas and electronics down, sealed the hatches and windows, and added lines everywhere.
"Winter Dream" looks downright naked!

They also did that when Isabel came thru.
I saw the skipjack Martha Lewis heading south this afternoon. Wonder where she's going???

Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

After some coaxing, I have decided to not ride it out aboard, and will counter being onboard with a healthy dose a preparedness. I am headed down friday / saturday to storm proof the boat...

1. Double up lines. Not redundant, but different cleats to different pilings
2. Put Helm seats in cabin
3. Put Tv, dvd, generator, and radio in the car
4. Tape plastic over cabin windows, bow hatch, and cabin door to keep driven rain out
5. Remove all covers, canvas, and bimini (including poles)
6. Remove Tv, and VHF antennas
7. Duct tape all cockpit deck hatches
8. Seal all vents (fuel/water/bilge)
9. Cover/Seal dash
10. Triple check all lines
11. Say a few prayers
12. Hitch the ski up and head home...

Did I forget anything?

-Shane

Shane, how did you make out today?
I talked to him a little while ago.
He couldn't get to the boat today, so I'll be assisting him tomorrow.
I guess it's my turn to help out....:)

a boat the size of the skipjack will do better out at sea, than tied up at the dock.

or maybe she was going to anchor up in a well protected cove.

At anchor there is no risk of tearing up the docks, and hurting the ship.

Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

So I just left my boat on it's mooring in the susquhana river. I did give it about 12 ft of rope between the boat and the bouy.

I figure on the mooring it can pivot so the bow is always facing the weather. So it might actually be better than being in a dock.
she is a 26 ft sailboat. and sailboats are built to handle weather. She does fine in 5 ft waves. and ten ft waves should not be a problem either.

I have 2, inch thick ropes holing her to the mooring.

Good luck to all you guys. Mine is on her trailer, in the yard. Storm will not be so bad on the northwest side of Washington.

Hope that everything went well for you guys today. Curious to hear how you made out.

On the bright side, if we all make it through this storm all right, Labor day weekend looks to be very nice :)

Good luck Kyle. Sounds like you did everything right.
Do you have any idea how big the mooring anchor is?

Yup, we got his Big Tin Can tied securely and did the 'plastic-over-the-windows' thing, just like on my boat.
He took everything off the weather deck- including the seats- so he should be fine.

When adding lines, I accidentely bumped his registration plate and it fell off- right into the drink.... Shane had to go for a swim to retrieve it. Oops!
With luck, the storm will get outta here early on Sunday. Hurricanes SUCK.

Rob - I swung by Tyding's on checked on "Winter Dream" for you. She looks great and looks as if she came through unscathed! All the plastic was still in place and the lines all looked good too! Hope everybody else had the same outcome.

What size boat do u have? We have a 28 foot cabin cruiser. We put in at anchor marine or rogue harbor depending on what part of the the bay we want to be at.

I think Northeast is the easiest place to get to from PA. I'm in King of Prussia, and depending on the day I travel 202 S to 30 E to 10 to 1 S to 272 to Northeast. I will use 95 when the traffic is light, but it is only 10-15 minutes quicker for me. And more often than not I get stuck on 95 and there is no where to go. I'll deal with the occasional horse and buggy to avoid sitting on 95 in shore traffic. I have a yearly pass at port deposit MD because it was only $50, but the ramp there is terrible. I started using Bay boat works in NE MD, the ramp is nice and not very busy, but the real selling point is that they have showers and that keeps the wife happy.

Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

Word is McKenna Renee made it through unharmed. Wasn't able to make it down, but a few people have checked for me. I may not make it back down until this Friday. We'll see.

A HUGE thanks to Rob and his oversized docklines... We got her buttoned up, just as the rains set in.

Sounds like everyone made it through unscathed!

Bill, thanks for the suggestion. We'd been launching at Anchor Marina but we'll launch from Bay Boat Works this weekend. I have the same reason as you with showers keeping the wife happy.
