From what I know, that is definately too long...

The antivent plate should be even with the keel... shorten her up :)

Re: boats on a budget

I pulled the lower unit, that was easy enough, I've never really worked on an outboard before other then changing plugs, but I did find a nice little how to on the net about doing the shaft conversion on the Evinrudes, it took me 5 minutes to pull the lower unit, it took a flat bladed screw driver and a 3/8 inch box end wrench, make sure you take the screw all the way out that holds the lower shift rod in place, it took me a couple of minutes to figure that one out.

I'll look the shaft conversion stuff up on the net again, I have no idea what I'm doing from here, I'll keep you posted.

I'm going to offer up the long shaft stuff when I'm done with this conversion, so if anyone needs the parts to convert a 9.9 short shaft to a long shaft, let me know, I'll include all the parts needed. this outboard has very low hours, the paint isn't even worn off the prop.

Hey just a quick Q, did you have to drain the leg oil before removing it?

I want to put a water pump kit in mine, not sure if I have to drain the oil?

Nope, I think I'm about to get into the water pump now, but I'm still searching the net for that how to article before I go any further, I'm stuck on how to get the drive shaft out of the lower unit.

Re: boats on a budget

the drive shaft comes out with the water pump, and the lower shift rod unscrews, pretty simple so far, watch the impeller when you pull the water pump out, make sure the blades of the impeller go back in the same way the old one came out with the blades bent in the same direction as the old one, or the pump isn't going to work right, and watch the little keeper pin thing that locks the impeller to the drive shaft, mine went flying, but I found it, the only thing left to do now is cut 5 inches off the water tube that extrudes from the exhaust housing, and put it back together.

seems to me that it's such an easy fix to replace the impeller that there's really no excuse to ever run with a bad one, it would take you all of 30 minutes is my guess to change it, pretty simple fix I think, now realize, I am saying that before I put the lower unit back on the motor, so maybe I'm speaking to soon?

When I got the water pump off, I saw a little corrosion in the lower unit, nothing bad though, I was able to clean it out with compressed air

Re: boats on a budget

and the job completed, we now have a 1989 9.9 horse Evinrude short shaft, it was a pretty simple job, I had a little trouble getting it back together, but that was from inexperience, next time, it should go a lot smother.

from looking at this pictures, I think a short shaft is going to work better with this boat. the pictures aren't very good, it was getting dark.

I still need to get the trailer set up for the boat, then probably take it out for a sea/lake/pond trial, then from there, fix the boat up and get it looking better.

I used to be afraid of working on these things, there really pretty simple, a few months ago, I wouldn't have even touched the thing let alone pull it apart, I just got done posting the old parts on e-bay, hopfully I get enough out of them to cover at least part of the cost of the new parts.

Re: boats on a budget

in the next couple of posts, I want to talk about what I'd like to do with the interior of the boat, now that the trailer is done (for the most part) and out of the way, and the outboard being done, it's time to work on the boat, it's going to be a slow boat rebuilding week for me due to work, but it will give me some time to think about how I want to do the interior and wood work.

so, first on the agenda is the wood work, everything is pretty much rotted out except the benches them selves, but I don't like those blue painted seats anyway, what I want to do is replace all the wood work, and have it done up in a rich natural wood grain as in the picture in this post. this is also going to include the transom, it's rotted out to.

so, what's going to be the best wood for me to use to have an outcome as in the picture? I'm thinking that plywood is out, I'm sure I can pick something up at home depot or someplace that will fit the bill nicely, but I'm not sure what kind of wood to get, so what are your suggestions?

I also want to put a floor in it, I'd like to do something close to what is seen in this next picture.

I'm not sure how to go about doing this kind of floor yet, there used to be a floor or deck in this boat but it's long gone, the brackets are still there though, I'll get some pictures of them tomorrow and post them, maybe you people will have a better idea them me on how to do a floor with the existing brackets that are in the boat.

Re: boats on a budget

one other thing I forgot to ask.

I need to strip, seal, and repaint the interior of the boat, what method am I going to use that's going to give me the best bang for the buck? I don't want to be limited to a particular color like truck bed liner black, I'm not sure what color I'm going to paint it yet, but I know I don't want it black.

Re: boats on a budget

i would clean the interior, especially the leak areas, and apply Gulvit to the interior up to the water line, then paint.

also not on the mounting of the motor, i put a 1 x 2 just the width of the motor between the top of the transom, and the motor, to raise mine that 3/4 of an inch. made a lot of difference.

Looking good so far. I have never done anything with aluminum boats so..I'll leave that to the experts.

If you are on a budget...stuff like teak and mohogany are probably be out. If you are looking for the planked floor (like in you picture) I would think that pressure treated pine would be perfect.

Is your transom aluminum with a wood bracket or all wood? If is is all wood...then marine plywood with fiberglass and resin...if just the bracket...they could get away with pt 1x or 2x.

With nothing enclosed...and if you make sure you don't have standing water in the boat...you shouldn't have a problem with the pt rotting.

JMW, pt and aluminum don't go together. the chemicals don't agree with aluminum. i suggest if you can find it, cypress.

I just got some better piuctures of the interior, I'll pull out all the wood work, then strip it, what's going to be my best bet for stripping it? what am I going to want to use, or how an I going to want to go about doing it?

Re: boats on a budget

when I replace the woodwork in the transom, it's going to be pretty easy to raise the transom by maybe an inch or so I think, I can replace that piece of aluminum that runs across the top of the transom with some aluminum that will drop down a little further and cover the new wood, I reference to the picture of the (now short shaft) outboard on the back of the boat, and seeing where the cavitation plate sits in relation to the bottom of the boat, is it going to make much difference if I raise the motor a little bit? it still looks to me like it might be hanging a little bit to low.

Tashasdaddy you suggested about 3/4th of an inch or so, for an ideal setup, about where am I going to want that cavitation plate?

I'm going to get a better picture of the motor on the back of the boat, be back in a bit with a new picture.

Re: boats on a budget

here's a better picture, I think that cavitation plate is supposed to be in line with the bottom of the boat, and it looks to me that it's hanging maybe an inch and a half to low? the bottom of the boat is right at mid center between the cavitation plate and there the lower unit bolts to the exhaust housing.

oh yeah, one more thing, about that "cavitation" plate, is that right right name and spelling for it, or am I off a little?

Re: boats on a budget

here's another little thing that's kind of bugging me about the boat.

first off, what do you call this part, I thought it was a "bow cap" but doing a google search for bow cap doesn't come up with much, I'd like to replace this one, if you look at the pictures, it looks like it's had a hole drilled through the front of it at some point for what I'd guess to be a bow eye, I'd like to put a bow eye on the boat, but place it further down the front of the boat like they are on most boats, if nothing else, I'd like to at least fill the hole up, so it looks a little better, this "bow cap" (if that's what you call it) looks like it had at one point, an eye or hook molded on the front of it that either broke off, or was cut off. is there someplace I can go to find a replacement?
