Not so much here in Minnesota, although it seems like every backyard has an aluminum boat upside down or leaning against the garage. Most of them haven't been in the water for years.

My neighbor saw one like that, but on a trailer, in a guy's yard. Just on a whim, he stopped and knocked on the door and asked the guy if he ever thought about selling the boat. The guy thought about it a second and said, "Sure. Give me $100 for it." My neighbor handed over the bucks and towed a nice 14' Alumicraft home on a decent trailer. He's giving it to his son.

get the registration # contact the owner, get the title and go get it. because once the title is in your name you are responsible for the salvage cost.

Why would you dump them when you can donate them to a charity and get a tax break??

Yep, it's a growing trend. Down here in Tampa Bay, there are probably four or five boats abandoned on islands as well as the shoreline. Also, in Davis Islands, there are still abandoned sailboats from a storm about two years ago. There has to be something else to resolve this issue, turn the boat over, donate it to charity, or something. Better yet, call me and I will be glad to take it off your hands. .

The economy is still pretty good in Houston so I have not even seen any real good deals on boats. The abandoned ones are non existent where I go boating.

Same here, haven't seen any real deals and nothing high and dry in the marshes.

I don't get it.. how are these boats not worth parting out? Why don't these people sell them for, say, $100 or post them 'FREE!'. The morons want $28K for them and when people don't call them sink them.. WTF, stop being so greedy and stupid.. somehow these people think dumping it on a shireline or sinking it is better than giving it away or selling for cheap?

Is this what America has come to .. "If I can't have it, nobody can" mentality.

Anybody know how salvage laws might apply to such vessels?

I know that in NC, where I used to live, there is a process for claiming abandoned vessels. You have to make a reasonable attempt to locate the owner. Once you can prove that to DNR, you fill out a form, pay a registration fee, and the vessel is yours. My 14' tinny was owned by a gentleman that passed away. I sent a certified letter to his last known address stating that I was in possession of the vessel and wanted to register it. When the letter came back "unable to deliver", that was proof enough for the DNR that I tried to contact the owner. At that point, I took ownership of the vessel.

That would work as long as the vessel itself wasn't under a lien.

I guess you have no choice if you can't pay the marina fees.

But why don't they try to sell the boat fro next to nothing, instead of trying to sell it for 20,ooo try to sell it for 10, or even 5,000 bucks. Just give it to someone who can pay to marina fees.

I merged the two duplicate threads, I gave the title to the earlier thread. I didn't see a third?

This topic was already started two times in the last hour.

Yup, I have a habit of checking out the topics first. I use it as my morning news paper. Then I make my comment or start a topic on it. Guess some people are so anxious to get the news out to only find out someone beat them to it.

Have a great day, this was not to offend anyone
