Bonehead move at the boat ramp

Had a great safe weekend tubing with the kids. All was going well until my bonehead move at the ramp. I was going to drive the boat up on the lakeside so I could back my trailer down the ramp to load my boat. Now mind you I am dry as dry can be up until this point and all is going well up to this point. I get about 20ft from bank, at idle of course, trim my outboard all the way up, so as not to hit the bottom, kill the engine and am going to coast onto the bank. I tell my daughter to jump out when we get close to the bank and not let the boat run to far up on the bank. So she just sits there with a deer in the headlights look, meanwhile we are approaching faster than I had anticipated. So I run up to the front to jump out and keep the boat from running to far aground. Did'nt take in to consideration to look at the depth finder to check the depth. I jumped out to what I thought was going to be sand a couple of feet under me and I never hit bottom, went right under the boat, hat was only thing that was floating on the surface. So when I finally come up I hear the roar of the crowd at the ramp laughing. Of course all my kids could think about was my safety and if I was ok. Ya right, I think they were laughing harder than anyone there was. But in the end all that was hurt was my pride. I dont think I will be repeating that trick any time soon.

It's amazing how one section of shoreline will be 2-3 feet for 20 feet out while another one is 10 feet deep just a couple feet off shore.

Glad you are okay!

I can relate with your kids. Went whitewater rafting with a group of friends a few years ago....the guide and one of our group were having fun trading barbs throughout the trip....at one point the guide directed the boat to shore where numerous other boats had stopped....he asked my friend to jump out and grab the boat....my buddy disappeared under the water about 3 feet from shore....never laughed so hard in my life.

I'm sorry Razorback, that was hilarious. I can just imagine the hat floating as the boat slowly goes over it. :D

Hope you didn't bump your head on the boat as you bobbed back to the surface :D

Hope you composed yourself and told everyone that you needed that "quick dip" to cool off.

Nate, I was at Blue Mountain Lake in Yell County. Its only about a 10 minute drive from my house so that is where I spend most of my time when it comes to watersports. Its a tough lake to fish, unless of course you want to go after Crappie.

That is funny now that we know all ended well. Did you lose your hat? :p

Great story! I was walking around my boat next to my windshield and my foot slipped and I went right in. Everyone was on shore getting a cookout ready got a good laugh.

Hey! That's why I always put my wallet in a ziploc sandwich bag before I get to the launch ramp. I've been in the water enough times to realize that it's inevitable. The cellphone goes in a ziploc bag, too.

Be prepared! The worst WILL happen.

Good thing you killed the engine. Might have had a different ending, or we might have read about it in the paper instead of here.

That aside, yeah that had to be hilarious! :D :D
