I frequently hear people say not to wax a hull bottom since it will wash off as soon as you run it. Weather it makes a difference or not performance wise I don't think it washes off. I put wax on the bottom of my boat and didn't polish it off. I didn't get a chance and thought since we were going to the lake it would just wash off. After a whole weekend on the water It was still there. I could use my finger and just wipe it off easy but the water didn't touch it. I took a rag and polished it off but I was surprised the water didn't affect it at all. I think a good wax job will last on the bottom of a boat.

Yes, It will be faster, I know from experience, if your boats not painted on the bottom this works! Some waxes with silicone in them will hold up better

I haven't seen wax wash off after some runs, it does wear off over time. The high performance boats won't wax the bottom because it creates a suction which slows a boat down. Like taking a piece of glass flat on top the water and try to pick it back up. This is were different ruff coats have come it like a sharks skin, and stepped hulls.

Non-high speeders like me like wax but my shoulders, back and arms don't ;)

Turtle Wax "ICE" liquid actually repels water spots, they never appear on my vehicles, might be worth a try ;)

Other way around... A waxed boat is ALWAYS slower! In a typical recreational powerboat, not going to make a difference, but when you start talking things like competitive rowing, pwc's, or sailing, the guys spending serious dollars make sure wax never gets anywhere close to the competition hull.

Long story short, you want a very thin layer of water to stick to the hull. Water against water is as slippery as it can get. A hull that doesn't like to get wet (waxed) isn't going to build a decent boundary layer and will be fighting turbulence all the way back.

Actually it's not just the wax but it is the smooth surface. We have screw presses at work and when the shafts gets polished the stock sticks. We go in every 4 months and sand the shaft with 40 grit disc. The sanded surface has less friction than a polished smooth surface. We want the shell to be polished and the shaft to be rough so the stock is pushed out instead of turning with the shaft.

Stroker Bass Boats use an "orange-peel" effect in there hulls...think like a golf ball! Make's 'em slipperier... the little air pockets don't let water adhere as easily! I have waxed and not waxed hull...at my lack-luster speeds, I've notice no difference; however, the boats almost always look nice in the trailer!!

If anyone would like to test any theories, please come to my house. I have plenty of wax. The only catch is you must start at the top of the boat and work your way to the bottom. :D

Intersting, if you apply that idea to a pontoon the toons with moss growing on them are faster than those with shark hide.

Except, toons are not planing hulls...they are displacement hulls...I know there are guys running 300HP outboards on some...I bet they feel like they're planing...maybe they are at those speeds?
