Are Boyesen Reeds as good as they claim? Has anyone used them with good results? I'm looking for better idle, '73 55hp is a little rough. Many have said its the nature of the beast, ie large bore 2cyl= a rough idle.

I heard they are a waste of money. Do a search in the JohnnyRude section for Boyesen reeds since their will be alot more topics in that section.

Search for "puddle drains" here in the force section for your bad idle.

If you have an underlying problem that is affecting idle, a set of Boyesen reeds isn't going to fix it. Problem may be caused by too much fuel build up which is addressed by the puddle drains like Whoopbass suggested above.

I tried a set of Boyesen reeds on my 1988 125HP. Slight improvement but not really worth the money in my opinion. I think they probably work better on 2 stroke engines that use a tuned expansion chamber exhaust system like motorcycles etc.

Well, for whatever it is worth ... If your engine was made by chrylser then I think i would stick with chrysler reeds. If your engine was made by mercury then I would either retrofit Chrysler reeds or put new boyensen reeds in every 3-5 years. The longer you run mercury reeds then the more likely your powerhead is to self destruct. Boyensen aren't necessarily better, but they are affordable enough to be replaced every 3-5 years.

i agree 210%, my 1998 120hp force broke a reed and luckily i found it before it did its damage, i put boyeson reeds back in the motor at 1/4 of the price it would've cost me to replace all the blocks. imo the boyeson reeds work really well, i'll buy another set when its time plus i no longer fear a broken reed trashing my outboard.
