"hard lay", "soft lay", "laid", "humping", "whipped", "rub against each other and cause chafe" . For gosh sakes, what kind of a forum is this anyways? Where are the mods when things get ugly?

Re: Braided vs twisted nylon rope.

After a season of use, I have to say that the braided line was much more pleasant to work with than the other. It was easier to wrap up to store and didn't kink up when dropped in a pile on the deck.

I have some line that just refuses to straighten out after being folded in the store packing. That stuff is going in the shed for use in the garden next year.

Hi, Mark.

Try stretching your line out along a longwharf by tying a bowline in one end and dropping it over the furthest set of cleats, then stretching to the cleatset furthest from that point... you'll see the line try to rotate to allow the lay to set as you do this: allow it to do so by rotating the working end. Coil it and you should have pretty much taken care of the problem, although if it's polypro you'll need to repeat it a few times. Nylon samson-braid should settle out after one or two and nylon and manila 3-strand laid should settle out after the first stretch.

BOL with it...
