took it in for a brake job, the pedal was getting soft. it was time.

got the car back and the brakes felt alot firmer but they started squealing after warming up. they had never squealed before.

i've taken it back to the shop twice now. after the first time nothing really changed. so i took it back in. this time they said they turned the rotor, adjusted the brakes, sprayed some anti-squeal....still squealing! it's not as loud as before but it's there. same symptoms, after warming up they squeal.

what did they do wrong? what can't they fix it?

i don't really want to take it back to the same bozos but i don't really want to pay another shop to fix their work.

thanks

Ayuh,... My guess is,... Nothing is Wrong....

After just having the brakes done, I'd think they used Hard pads, which last longer...

The "Fix" is to redo it with Softer pads, which wear out Much Quicker....

I have run into this same issue mostly with the Japanese autos. Most aftermarket pads will squeal. You can put anti-squeal lube on the shims but that will only last for a short while. Your best bet is to use OEM pads and replace the shims with OEM too. I hate going to a dealer for service but to get rid of the squeal you may have to. Some shops will always turn the the rotors which is some cases will make matters worse. A good shop will measure wear and check for run-out first. Personally, I would rather replace a rotor than to turn one down.

Re: brake job...brakes squeal now

is the squeal being made by my rotors being ruined?

the noise doesn't bother me that much. i i just cringe at the sound of metal on metal.

Re: brake job...brakes squeal now

Squeal can be either dust/dirt or vibration of the pad in the caliper. The anti-squeal grease is supposed to help suppress the vibration squeal. You might get some relief by cleaning the rotors/pads really well with a hose, but it'll probably come back as the pads wear and get dirty. As Bond-O said, the harder pads will wear better, but tend to suffer the vibration squeal/grinding noises, but the soft ones will wear fast & can get noisy with dust build-up.

Re: brake job...brakes squeal now

the squeal has nothing to do with ruining the rotors. that sound is much more grinding rather then squealing

brakes often squeal after being replaced with after market pads. there is nothing wrong and the shop did nothing to cause it.
brake shops do not use OEM parts. that's why they're cheaper than the dealer (one reason anyway)
sometimes the squeal will go away after some miles and depending on humidity sometimes not.

just looked again at your post above. metal on metal sound. did you by any chance tell them "yeah put the best on her"? the ceramic pads? those will make that metal to metal sound no matter what you do. they are good pads though

Im fresh on the brake pad/rotor thing so heres what I think.
i dont believe they cut the rotors because i dont think you can actually cut rotors anymore. (not familiar with the jap stuff cause I dont buy it.)
I agree with Bond-O too. Pad composition is most likely the cause.
Brake problems really get under my skin.
It so simple but ..................

i doubt they "cut" his rotors either. probably took off the wheel and ran a wool pad over them to clean them up a little.
some rotors can still be cut, not many though except for a very light clean up cut.

ok, i guess i'm worrying over nothing at this point. the noise i'm hearing isn't grinding. i'll give it some more time.

thanks!

Pull the wheel, look at the pads. Is the thin strip of metal an the side of the pad touching the rotor. I bought a car where there was a piece of metal that was part of the caliper rubbing and making a squeek. I think it was part of the ABS system. I took some pliers and bent the metal a little and viola, problem solved.

It's likely nothing but If I were you I'd take the time to pull a wheel and see.

By the way is the noise coming from a specific wheel?

the best i can tell is that it's the rear axle.

^^ This I have run into this from time to time mostly with ceramic pads which obviously are hard as a rock.
Last time I went through this The customer brought me the parts and then they squealed a little bit and I told the guy the only fix was going to be different pads and I recommended he get some Wagner brand "Quiet Stop" as I figured those were designed to be quiet judging by the name.
The noise on this 04 Sebring was very minimal I would describe at as a slight rubbing during slow/low speed braking but it was embarrassing for his 16 year old daughter who's car it was so it was quickly taken care of.

That's funny, I just put Wagner "Quiet Stop" ceramic pads on the wife's grand cherokee along with new rotors, yep, they squeal.. Not much, but it's there. Maybe the name of the pads is meant to be a joke?! Luckily the wife doesn't notice, she's either listening to music or listening to the kids. I'll be leaving it alone until the pads wear out.

Re: brake job...brakes squeal now

Bondo hit the nail on the head with harder brake material. As a mechanic I often had the same complaint from customers but all I had to do was show them the original bill and tell them they could be paybing me that amount in lass then half the life of the harder brakes. All they could say then was "guess I'll get used to the little bit of noise over the rather large hit to the old wallet" :D
Most people when you tell them you can pay the same amout in less than half the time tend to think a lot clearer once told this.

the best i can tell is that it's the rear axle.

Your Murano uses a drum type parking brake INSIDE of the rear discs. Did they change the rear shoes? My Chevy Avalanche uses the same thing. Disc pads were fine, drum shoes SHOT! If you Google Murano rear disc rotors, you'll clearly see the drum park brake on the inside of the rear rotor. It however would be a continuous squeak as the park brake is independent of the calipers but maybe only audible as your vehicle slows.

I stick with Raybestos Advanced Technology pads and rotors for all my vehicles and has been very pleased with no issues at all.

I have the lifetime shoes (Midas installed) on my truck rear drums and they squeal only when backing up and lots of moisture in the air. They will sing at the top of their lungs while backing down the ramp early in the morning. It doesn't matter if they're clean as a whistle.

Re: brake job...brakes squeal now

Sometimes disc brake squeal isn't caused by the pad/rotor contact, but the pad/caliper contact. The steel back of the pad rubs against the caliper body, vibrates and causes a squeal. Sometimes it gradually goes away on it's own. Many aftermarket brake pads come with anti squeal pads and goop, which is applied to the back of the pad.

Re: brake job...brakes squeal now

They used junk pads, probably even ceramic, that's all there is to it... They also need to use Brake Quiet on the backing plates, some shops try to skip using it.. I own a 2005 Murano and a 2005 Armada and I do my own wrenching on both...

There's alot of junk ceramic pads sold by brake shops and auto parts stores and alot of them are selling ceramics for vehicles that should be running semi-metallic pads instead... If you want them to fix it, tell them they need to change the pads for some quality pads. I stuck with Nissan OEM Rotors and Pads on the Murano for this very reason.. I'm running R1Concepts Slotted/Crossdrilled Rotors w/ Posiquiet Ceramic Pads on the Armada... Both are performing awesome with no dust or noise.. My next set for the Murano will be R1Concepts Slotted/Crossdrilled Rotors with Posiquiet Semi-Metallic pads.. Hope that helps. :)

Here's a pic of mine:

Re: brake job...brakes squeal now

squeel = no problem. just a sympathetic harmonic vibration in the audible range.

Grind = sumthin's wrong.

A little brake system grease (like Sil-Glide) on the back of the brake pads helps. A soft backer will also, but may cost a small bit of pedal throw.

Smooth finish, accurate sizing, lack of rust and crud all increase the likelihood of squeeling. Look at it as a sign of a good job.

No, I don't fix brakes for a living.
