Looks like someone painted the boat so tried cleaning a spot just to see if I could shine it up...Looks the paint is coming off on the rags not down to metal just some of it then looks like it stops after a real buffing..Had to stop dark and snowing:( ...I would like to know if maybe someone used the wrong paint or what the story might be any help is appreciated thanks.

Paint will do that once it has oxidized, you are just taking off the very top layer and it coul dpolish out real nice if you want to spend the time on it.

My guess would be as 5150 stated - most likely oxidation coming off. With a can of elbowgrease and some rubbing/polishing compound, it should look new again. Might want to stroll over to the restoration forum for more tips on removing the oxidation.

Nice boat, now comes the waiting game for spring!

Just be sure to look at restoring painted aluminum, not gelcoat. I am not a restoration expert, but would assume that working on your boat is more like working on the finish on a car. I doubt if you have a clearcoat, but it is possible. The marine "color restorers" are made for removing oxidation from thick gelcoat and can be fairly abrasive. You might talk with some local autobody shops to see what they suggest. I use a product from 3M called Finesse-it. From what I understand, it is less agressive than a typical rubbing compound. Whatever you do, test it on an inconspicuous spot first...just like the TV commercials say!

Great looking boat! i was going to strongly urge you to cover it to keep out the snow but you've, er, got that covered.

What part of the Empire State are you from?

I have used a product called "Never-Dull" for cleaning off overspray on autobody paint touch up jobs. Very mild and doesn`t remove the cured paint. Looks like a saturated chemical in cotton.....can also clean chrome , brass, copper, anthying with oxidation. We buy at Canadian Tire but any good hardware store should have it.

I just looked up the MSDS sheet on that "Never-Dull" its Mineral spirits on cotton.........But I used a small amount of the "Never-Dull" works great.....But I think economics would have me buy a can of spirits and buff with cotton rags.......:)
