Bravo 1 damage

Hi all,

Just got done replacing bellows, u-joints, and gimbal bearing on a 1996 bravo 1 . When I re-installed the drive it went on and left about a 1 inch gap between the drive and bell housing. I slowly wrenched on the six nuts to cinch it up. Now I am wondering if I have damaged the drive. The drive will shift into reverse but not forward. I was also wondering what kind of damage is caused by shifting into fwd and rev when the motor is not running? Thanks for any help

Did you have the drive in forward when you took it off, it needs to be there to put it back on or you may wreck the 'SHOE' as it wont line up going on.

Not true with a Bravo ^^^^^^ they are removed with the control in neutral and there is no "shoe" like an Alpha. You need to go to the Adults only section, item #9, and then download Service Manual #11.

John, you have most likely messed up the shift cable. You may not have ruined it, though. You'll have to remove the drive to find out. The cable from the transom fits into the "jaws" at the end of the cable in the drive. It's possible that you installed the drive when the jaws were closed. It's a common mistake, I did it once. However, my gear situation was just the opposite, it went into forward, not reverse.
Shifting it into and out of gear when it's not running, is a bad thing to do to a Bravo. it can cause them to stick in gear. DonS has posted about that many times. Stop doing that.

If it does stick in gear, what is the fix?

Thanks a bunch for all your help

I would hot-wire the starter and crank it while using gentle "out-of-gear" pressure on the shifter...(that's of course if the engine quits while it's still in gear)
