Break In Proceedures

My Evinrude repair manual tells me to NOT use double oil for breaking in after a teardown or rebuild. This seems opposite of what everyone else typically says.

I've used double oil for 12gallons and the plugs have fouled a little. Lots of carbon build up. I cleaned the plugs and put them back in until I burn up the rest of the double oil gas mix. My mechanic who rebuilt the motor also said use double oil or almost double oil. He said to use double for the first two (6gal) tanks. After that I can start going back to 50:1 and I can use my Royal Purple synthetic 2-stroke oil.

Anyone find a really bad logic in this?

Also, the carb flooded twice due to the oil mix. The plugs were so fouled after 2.5hrs of running with various speeds and cool down periods. The motor was hard to start. It fires fine now that I cleaned the plugs.

That I would really like to see. Never heard of not using double oil for either a new mtr or rebuild. Maybe some one else will chime in with more info.

I've always heard go with the 25:1 for the first couple of tanks after a rebuild too. Maybe a typo in the manual? Worth calling Corporate to ask?

See attached files from my manual. It states 50:1 for break in.

Best practice is to run 25:1 for the first 12 hours after a rebuild. Yes the engine will smoke a lot and yes it may foul the plugs but it's needed while all the new parts (rings, bearings, seals etc) set into place.

And don't bother with synthetic oil for that motor. Any TCW3 NMMA2 certified oil will work just fine.

I'm going to have to say it is a misprint. OMC was noted for making mistakes in their manuals at times.

A misprint. Great. What else did they misprint! :)
Thanks. I've already used about double oil I think I was 4oz. shy of double oil so I should be good.

I have (2) 6gal OMC tanks. Once I'm ready to go back to regular 50:1, I should in theory be able to put 3gal of pure gas in the tank with 3gal of pre-mixed double oil fuel correct? If it's double oil, you dilute it with more gas to get it back to 50:1. Since I was 4oz shy of double oil, I would add 2oz. to ensure it's true 50:1.

Re: Break In Proceedures

What I do is after 10-12 hours of 25:1 I start pre-mixing 50:1 as normal. The first few times you top off the 25:1 tanks the mix will gradually change towards 50:1.

My manual also says to mix at 50:1 during breakin. But at that time, they recommended mixing 100:1 for normal use.
Later, the recommendation was changed to 50:1 for normal use. This was to prevent seizing during storage, not for running problems.
So, I've also wondered, why not use 50:1 for break in also?

Well that's interesting. I have seen where someone swears using Amsoil synthetic works for him. That seems risky but if manufacture changed to 50:1, that sounds like they were tired of warranty work.

The 100:1 recommendation was only for small outboards and was retracted shortly afterwards. Never, ever run a V4 2-stroke on 100:1 unless you have lots of spare cash for rebuilds.

After a motor is rebuilt there is increased friction between machined metal surfaces. It takes approximately 10-12 hours of run time for the surfaces to wear slightly and settle into their permanent positions. The doubling of the oil mixture is to provide increased lubrication during this process and prevent the metal surfaces of the bearings, rings and pistons from wearing too quickly and unevenly.

Re: Break In Proceedures

If I have new mtr or rebuilt ( carbed that is not Ficht or E-tec ) I use 25:1 for the first 10 hrs and 50:1 there after. To each his own.

Re: Break In Proceedures

25:1 shouldn't cause any fouling to the point of misfiring and the need to change/clean plugs. If you do a lot of low speed( no wake)
you might get some fouling. We used to go all season of heavy weekend operation with our 61 18 hp.Evinrude,
Some summers me on my own for the summer.
