Hey guys ,
boat was running great but now a problem,
replaced the fuel filter and now the engine starts and the fuel pump breaker trips after a few minutes

SN plate on the engine is 4110149185 PN 3868623 5.7GIPLKDCE
also the inside transom part SN 4111562022
SN 4112037595 PN 3868164 is from the air filter cover and says 5.7 GI

Re: breaker on fuel pump trips

*after i dumped the old filter to check for water, put a brand new one in
*checked the fuel line for obstruction, there was a bit, so how can i get to the filter inside the tank?
*if it's the breaker itself, need to know how to test that,
* and i just found out i should have primed the fuel filter and the pump is probably original.

Go buy a cheap fuse holder for a 20A fuse and put it in place of the circuit breaker If it doesn't blow, then you probably have a bad breaker. If it does pop, then it's probably one of the pumps or a problem in the wiring.

thanks for the reply
*checked fuel tank vent line (ok)
*just bypassed breaker and tested with 20a fuse holder, engine starts for 15 seconds then fuse blew. wires warm (doing the same thing)
gave local parts man the engine sn and he says new fuel pump is #3857650

I guess i will order the new fuel pump unless i should be testing something else?
I checked the wire to the fuel pump. the connection has a broken snap connector
and fuel pump feels warm

Re: breaker on fuel pump trips

That is the correct number if it's for the Hi pressure pump, Is that the right pump?
Did you also order new orings? You better, or the old ones will leak.

I will check to make sure it's the right part, get "O" rings that link won't open.

and correct fuel pump

I would have bet money it was the low pressure pump and not the high pressure. That's why I wanted you to see the picture and part numbers before ordering.

I went to start it this morning just to make sure. I listened to both pumps waiting for the engine to die, well it kept running

Re: breaker on fuel pump trips

You need to do pressure tests on the low and high pressure pumps when the problem occurs. You also need to hook up a gauge and clear hose to the engine fuel filter (suction side) to monitor what is going on when it stalls, or makes noise or whatever.
You are now saying both pumps are quiet. I asked earlier if they were noisy, you said they were normal.
Makes it hard to troubleshoot from here when the information you give is wrong.
You are getting ready to destroy 5 or 6 hundred bucks worth of pumps if you keep running them. When your poblem may be nothing more than a 1 dollar clamp, or a small piece of hose. You MUST do the tests.

Thanks for the link to the fuel troubleshooting.
Sorry about the confusion, I'm just finding out about this engine and not taking anything apart when i dont understand ...I agree it's not wise to run it
I am doing maintenence like plugs, drive oil etc and will be taking the boat in so they can test it with the proper tools.

Re: breaker on fuel pump trips

Hey Don,
Thanks for help,
After i cleaned the pick up tube I must have turned the fuel shut off:redface:
Seems to be running fine now.
I replaced the plugs (carbon fouled) and Dist cap with a marine merc one (cheaper) the one on there was a auto part and totaly corroded, air cleaner was real bad lots of dirt soaked that in solvent and blew it out with air.
This video clip was before i did the tune up,

Hi,
well the boat went in to the mechanic and they replaced the low pressure fuel pump.
retested good at 8 pounds
they did a fault code test and found no codes
then tested the high pressure pump was only 14 pounds

ordered a new fuel pump and o rings
The mechanic told me to come back when the parts are in and asked to take the vst tank and pump off so it can be cleaned , and we ordered a gasket for that.

Now he says this week that he has a guy not working and my wife has holidays booked.
is it possible for me to put the clean the tank and pump on myself?

Re: breaker on fuel pump trips

my boat is still not fixed

mechanic said he wont have time to finish my boat , he is just too busy.
then i get the fuel pump they said i need
took it home, its a low pressure pump, wrong one.

almost installed it, but i get a call to bring my boat in
turns out they misread the original readings

and 14 pounds is ok reading for the high pressure pump not 30
so went down to have the job finished and the o ring they ordered was wrong, turns out there are 2 o rings on one end of the hi press pump but only one was installed on my engine since new

the only good thing is the mechanic only charged 2 hours labour so far

now i'm on my own, so need to get the right o rings and will be finished.

does anyone have fuel systen pdf? that might be helpful
