An earthquake of magnitude 5.4 rattles Illinois.

5.4 is too minor to worry about injuries... worry instead about wall spackle needing a bit of patching. Been through many a 5.something quake... no big deal. Above 6 is time to worry.

WEST SALEM, Ill ? A 5.4 earthquake early Friday rocked people awake as far away as Indiana, surprising residents unaccustomed to such a large Midwest temblor.
The quake just before 4:37 a.m. was centered 6 miles from West Salem, Ill., and 66 miles from Evansville, Ind. There were no immediate reports of injuries.
"It shook our house where it woke me up," said David Behm of Philo, 10 miles south of Champaign. "Windows were rattling, and you could hear it. The house was shaking inches. For people in central Illinois, this is a big deal. It's not like California."
The quake also shook tall buildings in downtown Indianapolis, about 160 miles northeast of the epicenter.
Indiana State Police spokesman Sgt. Todd Ringle in Evansville said there were no immediate reports of damage.

Got rocked good here in O'Fallon Illinois. I thought the house was gonna come apart (new cardboard house construction). Dog was in the basement barking going nuts, my bed shaken, the walls and floor. Honestly, it shook pretty damn good. Lasted a good 30-40 seconds. Damage report: small crack in basement floor and wall (concrete).

it depends on if the quake was shallow or deep......california uasually gets deep quakes...so the 4.5-5.5s dont do too much.....

but if its shallow.....a 4 will destroy a city in seconds.....in califonia 4.5s dont uasually crack basements

let me put it too you this way up north of it, it shook my water bed enogh to wake me and I am a heavy sleeper. Thought the dog was doing something as big as he is. Thought he was running and jumping around with all the movement and I am 50 mile north of peoria.

You're right, the strongest quake I remember since I've been here was a 3.something that I didn't even feel. But I didn't grow up here... didn't move here until 1998, then briefly moved overseas after that and moved back around 2003. I've lived all over the place. Seattle, San Diego, Manila, and Knoxville just to name a few of the more well known places I've lived.

This quake I think was 3 miles deep so its wasn't a very deep quake. The ground in the Midwest is solid unlike California so the effects of a less magnitude quake can be felt for miles. I'm about 80 miles or so from the epicenter and I tell you my place wasn't shaken, it was rockin! Sounded like the whole second floor was going to come apart. Freaky!

Yep, but not a single injury was reported from the whole thing. 5.4 is just too weak a quake to have to worry about injuries.
