IBoats has a 5hp Briggs & Stratton listed for sale, anybody know about this. Good/ bad etc., I've never heard of them in a marine setting. Great lawn mower motors.....

I guess they're supposed to be good for shallower water being air cooled no need for a waterpump but you still have to be deep enough for the propeller so I don't know what the advantage is maybe the price?

To be honest I've never heard anything particularly good about them. I feel the money spent on a new B&S would be better spent on a used Johnson/Evinrude/Mercury, etc.

Air cooled so think about sitting in the boat with your lawnmower running wide open right behind you. Not my idea of a fun ride and I agree 100% that this is a dirty water motor only or one that someone on a very limited budget would have to contend with and then wonder why they didn't just pair of oars.

Re: Briggs & Stratton

i used one for a couple of days in n. ga. loud, vibrates a lot. top end with 2 guys in a 1444 jon was under 7 mph.the one good thing, u can start it out of the water. that all being said, i would not buy a new one and if i bought used it would have to be around 200. for the price of that 5 hp u could come close to the price of a new tohatsu 5 hp. try online outboards .com

If you need an air cooled motor, check out the Honda 2HP, 4 stroke, air cooled, centrifugal clutch driven, 28 lb. motor. For shallow water, claming, crabbing, fishing, small boat/canoe might be a motor to consider. Like they said, the Briggs-Stratton is mostly a lawn mower with a prop, and they don't recommend it at all for salt water. Good Luck!

For the money you could get a darn nice used 5,5.5 or 6 hp Evinrude or Johnson.

Gentleman on my canal has a maby 16 ft. open boat with an air cooled engine. Have not seen it up real close, looks to be a 2 cyl. wisconsen or tecumsa. Horizontal drive shaft sticks out at least 4 ft. Looks like one of those engines you see on boats in the orient. Must be reliable, been using it for years in salt water. FRED

I would have to agree that having such an engine running wide open behind you in a boat would not be my idea of fun, either. Leave the B&S engines to
lawn mowers where they belong and use the money for a much more suitable
motor for marine use such as a used Mercury,Evinrude,or Johnson of about 6 HP or so.

I`ve read that these motors are okay for running at speed so theres airflow for cooling.

If you want to troll at idle, a water cooled engine would be better suited.

LOL,
A weed wacker with a propeller comes to mind with those specs.

Re: Briggs & Stratton

I have seen the Briggs and Stratton outboards at Cabelas in Reno Nv.
I have never used one or even seen one on the water.
I must say that Briggs and Stratton sure knows how to make engines that last. I have a lawn edger with a Briggs and Stratton engine. It is 54 years old. It still has the original spark plug. I used it yesterday. Engine runs like a charm, everything else is about worn out.

Re: Briggs & Stratton

Keep in mind that it is clearly been stated that the B&S outboard IS NOT for use in any salt water environment.

ditto on salt water.
the "prop on a stick" is also a go-devil.

The ones I saw in Thailand were crazy; Chevy engines on a swivel with a 20' pole behind them!

There are a number of B&S videos on youtube just put in 5 hp outboard.Eventually you'll find B&S and a number of home builts.I wasn't impressed with the any of them as far as performance.

Cajuns in the bayous and swamps of Louisiana have been using them for many 10's of years on their pearoux semi canoes.
