Not bad, it's just a lawnmower engine on a lower unit. Their lawnmower engines are pretty good, and it's 4 cycle so it gets good mileage and no smoke. Also air cooled, so you don't have to worry about the water pump.

Oh you mean the old otasco 5hp air cooled deal, used to have one or two many years ago. Parts you can still get for the engine but as far as lower unit and shaft parts props ect i'd bet they are scarce. But they were tough little motors as long as you keep the oil changed, same as you do on your lawnmower, same vertical shaft motor. One thing about it if you blow your motor you could steal the one off the lawnmower and your back in bussiness I haven't seen one of those for years. I think Sears carried them too. You better not be in a hurry those things would push a 12' flat bottom boat about 5 or 6 mph. but one thing about it you wouldn't spill your brew :D

Honestly, it could be well worth the money. If your going to be using it when the wind dies, you should be ok. You don't need to put it in a water tank or mickey ears to to test the engine, and it's a simple lawn mower engine. It's a 2003 and up, so it should be a little stronger than years ago. Just after you have it in the ocean, hose it down to wash the salt off because it will eat it alive. And don't plan on pulling skiers behind!

Has anyone noticed Briggs is making a small electric outboard now? It lookes just like a regular outboard but is electric.

Yeah, only needs enough batteries to power a small town. Interesting idea, but not very practical.
