Re: broke a axle today at 70mph

Wow I'm not trying to get slammed here all I was tring to do is show everyone that no mater how something looks or how many new parts are on it things can go wrong I had new hubs new bearings new tires and did not know axel was bad. So thank y'all for all the........ The rest of the trailer looks like it did 37 years ago solid like when it was new so no I never look at the axle

Please don't take it as a "Slam". No Slam intended!

There's a LOT of risk out there in radio land. I hope this thread gets everyone who has an older trailer like yours (and mine) to take a very close look at the running gear under it!

Welcome to iboats!

Yikes!
I'm going to disagree with some of the other posters. The rest of the trailer looks pretty good, but there was clearly a crack in the axle for a while; only the top appears to have been un-rusted metal. Even the u-bolts look pretty good, so I'm not sure from the pix that you need anything more than the axle. How big is the boat? You need to know the total weight of the whole rig to make sure you get an axle of adequate capacity.

PoleCat,
Welcome and hang with us. :D

Don't feel you are getting slammed.
People on this forum tend to express animated opinions at the drop of a dime.
Wait a few posts and someone will show up with the opposite animated opinion. ;)

Plus keep in mind that a lot of us Northerners are already suffering from cabin fever and are getting a little paranoid!

For DLNGR: If you think anyone going less than 64 - 67 MPH is a hazard, then you need about five more years of experience to realize those roadways belong to everyone -- not just you. When you are cussing out those going slower than you did it occur to you that it is you who just might be the hazard. There are truck drivers and then there are drivers who think they are truckers.

SILVER,who said I'm cussing anybody out? ?? lots of 'em going too fast too. I'm out there 400 miles a day,I see plenty.[I have plenty more than 5 years experience driving, trucks, and over 15 years in the tow truck business]

Go back and read what you wrote. My redponse to your 64 - 67 MPH comment remains.

It's ok silvertip... you can drive slow if you want.... just do it in the right hand lane... we won't cuss and you won't have to either....

I think his point was that slower than average drivers can pose just as much of a hazard as faster than average drivers.
I think actually worse because fast drivers (not be confused with overly aggressive or weckless) look ahead and slow down when needed while many (but of course not all) slow drivers don't even consider those behind and will often cause huge backups that condense traffic causing more dangerous conditions that could be easily avoided with a lane change by said slow driver.

The only 45 mph speed limit I could find refers to towing a mobile home.

It's on the back of U-Hauls, so it must apply to all trailers ...

I almost "lose it" when people drive slow in the "fast lane"!:mad-new:

Live and learn.
At least nobody was hurt. And its not a hard fix but I would do both axles at the same time as the other is most likely rusted out as well.
Good luck.

You know the boat and trailer are sitting on another trailer, right? It is kind of an illusion at a quick glance that its on a tandem trailer. I had to take another look... pics are hard to see on my phone.

It is apparent that the point is being missed here. Most interstates have a MINIMUM as well as MAXIMUM posted speed limit. If less than 64 - 67 is a hazard, then half the trucks on the road are hazards. Maintaining speed with other traffic is obviously a good thing. But there are times when better judgement prevails. Keeping up with traffic was definitely NOT a good thing in the recent Texas chain reaction crash in the fog. That is just one of a bunch of scenarios. At a tick over 2 million miles on our roads I've seen all the stupid "get out of my way" I care to see. The only way you will ever get everyone at the same speed, and that time is coming, is when our vehicles are all electronically controlled based on current traffic loads and speed.

And I, for one will welome it-- I just LOVE clicking into cruise control and relaxing the right leg while on long highway trips. No worry about offending Smokey either if you set it at or only slightly above the limit. They do give you a little. And just imagine the lack of stress in your daily commute.

Re: broke a axle today at 70mph

hence my issue with slow in the fast lane drivers... I set my cruise at a speed that gets me out on my own... I try to choose a speed a little slower than the speed demons and a little faster than the pokeys.... If I find myself in a growing crowd of "followers" I will speed up or slow down just a little... When someone sets up a rolling road block there is little you can do to get out of the crowd other than just stopping for a break.

I took the original "less than 64-67" comment to be slightly tongue in cheek and also understand that there are freeways in this country that have speed limits of 75 mph and iirc I think a couple of 80 mph roads... given that a good portion og traffic is moving at 80-85 mph... while the slow vehicle may not be doing anything "wrong" I would be much more afraid to ride at 55 than at 75 in 80+ mph traffic.
