Re: broken bolt need help!!!!

The first suggestion would be to remove the starter and see if there is any part of the old bolt still sticking out of the engine block, that you could possibly get a pair of vise grips on to remove. If there is nothing sticking out of the block, the next option is to go to the local auto parts or hardware store and get a screw extractor or "easy out", you would then drill the apropriate hole in the old bolt and use the "easy out" to remove whats left (threads in block still there). The last method would be to drill out the old bolt and use a tap to re-thread the hole. I realize that anything that involves drilling out a starter bolt is very difficult to get to. If space for the drill is an issue, remember that you can get an adapter for your drill (forget what it's called) that has a 90 degree fitting on it to alow you to drill " at a 90 degree angle". Good luck, keep us posted how it goes.

If I can't manually remove the broken bolt I take the motor out of the boat,so I can more accurately drill it out.
When done (wrong)if the bolt hole is off at all,the motor will eat starters and flywheels forever.

DHP

First of all,did it break coming out or tighting it up? if it broke going in you might be in luck. Drilling a case harded bolt in the boat upsidedown is next to inposible, however,if it broke going in it might easy to get a 5/16 left handed drill bit and it might grab it just enough to bring it flush with the block. the good part of this is, the threads are recesed about a 1/4 inch. If you get it flush find someone with a DREMEL TOOL with a cutoff wheel then you can grind a grove in the bolt and use a screw driver to work it out. Don't worry about the groving in the block the little bit won't hurt because theres no threads there.
I HAVE DONE THIS. Good luck

Have you tried contacting the place that replaced the starter. If you paid them to change the starter and they broke the bolt, let them fix it....

Re: broken bolt need help!!!!

Same happened to me but I was lucky because the bolt didn't brake evenly so I could use the other half of the bolt to guide and unscrew the half into the block eventhough it was not reachable.

Check the other half to see if it helps.

Good luck.

Gab

Re: broken bolt need help!!!!

Those long, from the bottom up, starter bolts will break fairly easily.

Could be from improper torqueing, but usually from loss of starter support from the support bracket on the other end of the starter. The one that holds it to the engine block being loose or left off by previous repair.

At any rate the threads on the bolt, and block have a somewhat loose fit and what's left in there usually isn't too tight of a fit.

That being said, the standard procedure requires engine removal.

But it doesn't hurt to give it a go with a mirror and a sharpy squared screwdriver, or something that might get a bite into it, and try and screw it back out first.

this worked for me: using a welder at low setting or a good set of jumpers try tacking a bolt onto the broken stud.other than that youll have to pull the motor to properly fix it or flywheels go bad in a hurry.

Ahhhh,... Yes,......

An Old Trick My Mentor taught me,........... ;)

Find a piece of rubber Tubing,.. That'll Just Slide into the sized Bolt Hole you're working on...............
Slip it Onto the end of the Welding Rod,.. Leaving the rubber tubing sticking out Longer than the welding rod...........
Use the Tubing to align the rod tip to the Center of the broken bolt,+ Arc it for a few Seconds,.......
Release the rod from the stinger handle,+ Walk Away for Atleast 10 minutes,..........
The Tubing will protect the Threads,+ Make Sure that you're Centered,....

If you're Lucky,....
When you return to the Cooled Off bolt,.. Slide the tubing off,... Lube with your favorite penetrating oil,......
And Try to turn the Welding Rod/Bolt Out................

I Agree DHP,+ the Others,............

I Usually find it Easier to Pop a few bolts,+ Wires,....
Than to even Consider Trying it In the Boat..........
