Look for leaks, see if any rust on oil pan and could get a good look at the coupler. The coupler should be good but while its out, worth a look

I looked for leaks and the oilpan and engine look good. There was a little rust spots near the manufold drains and a block drains but it doesnt appear to be actively leaking. The orings look good.

I did check the coupler and it looks new so I think that must have been replaced not too long ago. I reinstalled the engine and re-checked the engine / coupler/ outdirve alignment and it was stil good thankfully.

I also did replace the trim sender and limit switch and it wasn't nearly as bad as I had read. I can see where it would be a pain if you didn't undo the hing pins on the gimbal though. But since the outdrive was already off, I just took the hing pins out and there was enough flexibility in the bellows to allow me to push the gimbal housing down and access the plate with the bolt that holds the gromet for the wires directly without any kind of weird tools.

if you had some of the old bolt still sticking out, I would have welded a nut to it before trying to drill it out

on option........ the pertronix polished marine starter uses the straight pattern (starter has two sets of holes)

here is the black powdercoated version https://www.summitracing.com/parts/pnx-s3000b-m

Will this work on my 5.7 L 350. It’s the 14in 168 tooth fly wheel. Same thing happened to me the back bolt on the staggered pattern broke. The 350 block has both patterns tapped. I really don’t have the money or resources to have motor pulled if this will work.
