Well, I snuck out of work early yesterday to go fishing.;) Caught a few good bass and then when I went to fire the motor up I broke the starter rope. i was able to get it running by wrapping my back-up rope around the flywheel, but before I go ahead and order repair parts (iboats has everything!) I want to make sure I get everything I need.

The recoil spring seems to have lost a lot of tension, can I rewind it or do I need to buy a new one ($20.99)? Here's a picture:

I'll probably replace the starter gear as the plastic is a little chewed up where it engages the flywheel.

While I'm in there I'm going to rebuild the carburetor again and I'm considering changing the fuel lines to "ethanol friendly" lines. Should I replace both the large 1/2" hose and the smaller 3/8" hose? Can I use small zip ties in place of the original plastic clamps?

All of this may seem like overkill, but I'm taking this motor with me on vacation at the end of the month and I'll be running the boat with my Nephew in it, so I'm trying to make it as reliable as possible. Thanks in advance.

Great little engines 9.9's. If you can't see any physical problems with the recoil spring, leave it be. Put a little grease in the bottom of the cup. Your local John/Rude dealer should be able to help you with the right length of rope......I wanna say 68".....but they vary.

The correct fuel line is 5/16".....ID. Dealer should have this in stock. You can use use zip ties but if you don't have the gun to tighten them, use snap clamps....#8's. Cheap and reusable.

Hope this helps.

Thanks OBJ, it definitely helps! The spring has become unraveled and loose in the center so I ordered a new one. I figure piece of mind is worth at least $21.

Unfortunately there aren't any OMC dealers left here (that I know of), do you think the 5/16" fuel hose and clamps could be found at an auto parts store?

Thanks for the help - BOB

Napa should have the fuel line in stock and clamps if you have one there

Likely the fuel line will be Bob. See if you can get the "alcohol resistant" line also. Not sure about the snap clamps. If you do use zip ties, use the wide ones and tighten them as best you can. You can use needle nose plies and get in close and roll them pretty well tight.
