Re: buffer

I use Porter Cable tools a lot, and they make good tools. I'd go with this one:

There's more to a "good" tool than it being cheap, and having the option of returning it when (not if) it comes apart. Harbor Freight has the "No questions asked" warranty you can (and better) buy for a reason.
Just my 2 cents worth.

Re: buffer

your buffing/polishing, not grinding. I have never gone above 1800 RPM buffing a car, truck, plane, RV or a boat. first pass is at about 1000 RPM

the Porter Cable unit spins way too fast.

Re: buffer

What do I use?
A vintage Black and Decker Buffmaster. Dual variable speeds (rotary and trigger).
They show up on ebay occasionally. Over the years I've snagged two of 'em for 50 bucks each and they're both still working great.

This is basically what I use. Mine is a snap-on but I Think its the same thing ( Black and Decker Pro build ).

I like it because its Light and does not get Hot.

As far as the production buffers out there I think both the Makita and the Dewalt have their merits.

The Porter Cable isnt really a Buffer. Its more like a polisher. I have 4 of these things that are used for sanding ( you can get the buffing attachment for the same PC sander ). I just use the velcro pad along with a 6" foam pad for any Polishing or waxing I might have to do on Paint.

The H.F. sander/polishers sometimes on sale for 35-40 bucks are not really geared towards Gelcoat. They would do fine for Paint and Clear Coat Polishing in most cases. Rubbing out an oxidized hull is kinda hard on these tools. I have Smoked ( literally smoke coming from the machine ) a few of these pressing hard trying to get out a few left over sanding scratches on a blend repair. They are fine for Light duty buffing only. So if you want to spend the time to wetsand up to 1500 grit or more .. then this tool might be a good tool. If you want to apply some sealer this tool would do the job. If you want to Rub out a Hull .. probably not a good tool.

Its really up to application.

I use the Harbor Freight one too, and purchased the extended warranty. I use their grinders too, and they have replaced them twice.
