Whats up guys,im currently doing a transom repair on my 1985 bayliner cuddy . Its an outboard boat.It has a force 125 on it (white one).Ive already cut the wet rotted wood out and put the new wood in its place ,i used west system epoxy and im getting ready to make the new inner fiberglass wall ,im going to put a layer of wovenroving then a layer of fiberglass mat then another layer of wovenroving will this be strong enough? Also should i use .75oz mat or 1.5oz mat? I glassed the splash well in to the transom(it wasnt before), the transom is definetly very very strong now ,any info would be greatly appriciated, thanks guys

Re: building a new inner transom wall

id go 1.5....

stronger the better.....

make sure you overlap the glass from the transom into the side of the hull.

you want the glass at approx a 6 inch overlap......

just about done eh?

good for you...youll be catching fish before you know it :D

cheers

Your layer order should start with mat first cloth second, mat last will give a smooth surface to finish

Re: building a new inner transom wall

It seems to be the consensus to use mat, then roving, then mat, etc. However, if I were to use 1708 biax (with the mat stitched to the back), wouldn't this be stronger, or is the roving & mat combination stronger than biax?

Thanks,
Justin

Re: building a new inner transom wall

With epoxy there's no need for the mat, so cloth and/or roving will work.

1708 will be a little stronger and lighter, but on a small area like just the transom it may not be worth trying to find it and then paying the higher cost.

If you have some 1708 or can get it easily and don't mind the extra cost then use it.
