Bunk Slicks tougher on paint?

Recently bought a 02 17.5 Smokercraft and the carpet on the bunks is showing some wear.
Was thinking about replacing it with UHMW but a freind of mine thinks it might be a little rougher on my painted aluminum hull.
Thanks in advance for the input.

The bunk slicks do great on fiberglass gelcoat but for painted aluminum i would stay with carpet.

Most bunk slick's enclosed directions say do not use with painted aluminum boats because they will wear the paint off. Some online sites carry this disclaimer before you buy them.

The set I bought from Overton's a few months ago did not have that disclaimer so I bought them only to discover the directions told me not to use them!

They did a UPS pickup and took them back because they did not have that disclaimer posted..

Just recarpet them as the above poster suggested and pick up a can of the spray on bunk spray if you still need them slicker.

Bunkers rough on paint? You betcha! Rollers rough on glass/ keel wood? you betcha twice!!

Some outdoor carpet on the bunkers reduces the wear on the paint, yet there will be some wear. There will also be some wear on gelcoated hulls. Accept this: paint/re-gelcoat and motor on, accept the roller wear, or get out of the business of trailering.

Wet storage also has it's drawbacks. Run the numbers and decide what you can/will afford for your pleasure.

I personally have run tire strips as my bunker material with a heavy boat when the rub was below the waterline (black marks on the antifouling paint) and outdoor carpet (Astro-turf) on the above waterline paint with little adverse concequences. Yes, there was wear that had to be retouched every year, but 50 or so square inches is of little note.

I hope this will encourage you to do the slight maintenance and enjoy the rest of your watery experiance!

Thanks to all for your responses.
I was pretty sure I'd get the straight scoop here.
I'll be putting on new outdoor carpet one of these days soon.
