Bunks, proper size and location.....

Well I have all the parts necessary for my trailer rebuild except the bunks. What length of bunks do I need for my boat (24 foot Trophy)/how far forward do they need to extend to? Should I consider having four bunks 2-inner and 2-outer (see the picture with red marks), or just replace the ones in the current position? To get the curve of the hull right should I set the boat on before tightening the middle support bracket? I plan on using the same size lumber 4x6's, and I'm considering the 4 bunks because it seems that it would be a lot easier to get the boat straight on the trailer when loading. Any suggestions?

Re: Bunks, proper size and location.....

i would use the present set up, but the bunks need to be adjusted, see yellow mark. i would add 2 self centering rollers on the cross members, will really help load, and on a boat that size guide on are a must. click on pic to enlarge. also remove your existing bunks, and use for a pattern.

self centering keel rollers, ( they have to go on in the right direction, or will throw bow off the roller) http://www.iboats.com/Self_Centerin...59951643--**********.386354032--view_id.56624

this i my 23 have no problems with centering and loading.

The yellow mark you made is it suggesting that the bunks should be closer to the rib? I wasn't sure if the bunks should be put at a wider location then they are right now. It just seemed to me that they should be put as far out as possible to ease the loading and prevent any shifting while towing. The self-centering rollers make a lot of sense and I plan of using them.

When a thread comes along (with photos) asking where should I put my trim tabs, or where should my bunks be located, I find myself tring to use paint to crop the photo and end up with a bunch of scribbles, I see now I'm not the only one lol.
I would rather have a 4 bunk set-up, don't you think the 4x's are overkill?

I'm not sure whether or not 4x6's are overkill but if I keep the bunks where they are I will be going with 4x6's again...

look at your picture, it looks like the strake is sitting half on the bunk, half off the bunk.

I think that's an illusion in the image ;) the strake ends just around the mark you made, so the strake is not sitting on the bunk. The boat is not 100% straight on the trailer, it can go about 1/2-1" further to the right which would distance the strake from the bunk a bit more...

all the more reason for guide ons. i set my with only 1 1/2 inch total clearance, the boat has to go where it belongs.

Well looks like I'll be sticking with the bunks in the same location and size. I'll be getting couple of self centering rollers, the guides will come at a later stage...Now, I got to get ready to get the boat off that trailer this weekend.

Re: Bunks, proper size and location.....

I have the boat up on the blocks, it wasn't as big of a deal as I thought it was going to be. I do have one more question for you guys.....The current bunks only have two supports, should I add one more at the very back when I extend the trailer?
