I just totally rebuilt my 140 merc, fisrt day out no problems wot plenty of times and trolling or 5hrs, until I went wide open to go back to shore, engine failed, just bought a hand held the night before,no kicker on the boat, but the canandian coast gaurd(tow boat) came to the rescue. Actually in better time than a tow truck would and at no charge, bonus.Have a kicker now no engine problems, My radio is always on, for stranded boaters etc.I sure learned my lesson alright.

I always carry a hand held. Never needed it but it is always reassuring.

Like BLU, what did you expect? WOT and trolling on a new engine. The 2 things you should have avoided the most.
I can't even feel sorry for you. You brought it on yourself.

You should carry a VHF, CB, and a Cell phone. with your next engine, one of them should work.

It has had about 5 engine hrs before I took it out,why it failed is because some young tech thought it would funny to see what would happen if you bang around a composite fibre cam gear, without any one knowing, payback is coming soon.No issues since, should of kept it under lock and key.

Some young tech tampered with the composite fibre cam gear, had three merc senior techs confirm it,no isues since.at wot, wow does this engine go, I forgot to mention, before the initial outing I ran the engine 5hrs on the hr meter.

Many many years ago, the old time mechanic that taught me my auto mechanics told me that if you put an engine together straight and within spec, break in amounts to the first warm up.

When I build an engine, if it makes it the 3 miles to town,:D:D it'll live forever.

The break in thing comes from when rod bearings were poured in place babbit, and if a journal was within .002 inches of round, it was good. The babbit had to be formed to clearance before it was driven hard.

I can see a break in procedure for the fancy ring metals and cylinder wall treatments in modern 2 cycle engines.

Only break in I have done is the cam break in on a flat tappet engine and have to agree if going WOT a few times and trolling are going to kill a frsh motor, so be it. Make it right.

Composite cam gears ? Too bad those werent left with the Chevy Citation in 1983......What a load of rubbish.

I'm shotting for a fixed mount 25 watter for next season.
