Re: Buying a 79 22ft Center console tomorrow!

Nice!
Yep,, many use the existing tank,, just check it over real good... rust, thin spots - see if you can push an ice pick through it,, clean it out real good and pressure test it. If it all checks out,, it's good to go.

Thanks as that's very encouraging! Moving to where we will be doing most of the work on it this W/E and from there it'll be busy winter. The amount of know how on this board is awesome and I'm sure I'll need it.

...(gluvit???) < what is this? ...Do many reuse the Alum oem tank? mine doesn't appear to have been leaking.

Gluvit is an epoxy-type paint that is used to seal rivets and seams on tin boats. Most guys clean the inside of the hull and then paint the Gluvit with a brush and/or roller. It seeps under any raised edges and keeps out water. More info here: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=319028

My boat came with a factory installed 50 gallon aluminum tank. I pulled it out and hit it with a power-washer. Cleaned up pretty nice. I am most definitely going to use it. Will probably coat the seams and sides with Gluvit for insurance. With gas at almost $4 gallon, I will likely never fill it, but it keeps the decks clear and gives me a lot more range than a couple of 6 gallon cans would.

You've got yourself a true blue water boat. One of the nicest, driest and biggest 22' C/C's built. When you pull your gas tank you'll see a label telling you how many gallons and not to pressure test over 4PSI so be careful. Goop makes a product called Coat-It it costs 1/3 less than Gluvit and is black so you can see where it's being applied.
That 150 merc will move you right along should top out over 40 mph. Good luck with her and have fun with the rebuild.

Thanks for the reply. I'll certainly fill it up at least a couple times a summer. I've got a few spots to hit where they are about 40-50 miles round trip.
My plan is restore the boat and figure out if it the ride/layout will do the job. If I love it, I'll sell the merc and buy a new 150-175hp o/b with a 15 hp 4/s kicker. I wouldn't have bought other wise. I really have a 175hp Opitmax(or Yamaha F150) and a 15 hp pro kicker in my crosshairs.

Re: Buying a 79 22ft Center console tomorrow!

Ok guys we really got after it this weekend. Having a good friend help makes all the difference in so many ways. We got the floor tore out, all of the foam out, and got a real good idea of what we got now. Only had a small amount of poured in foam up front and the rest was styrofoam. Got really lucky on that one. The transom is 100% good. I'd say the previous owner replaced it and used the boat very little. Gas tank appears to be in excellent shape as well. What was under the gas tank can only be described as NASTY! We are going to fab up better bracing for the floor supports, and we are going to move the batteries to the front of the boat to help wuth the ride a little bit. I'm confident enough that I'm not going to pull transom covers or any of that off. Next weekend we're going to get the trailer out from under it, power wash the inside, and get a good start on rivets. I want to have the riveting/gluvit, wiring, and deck back in before the snow flies. Might even get it painted before the snow flies. Super excited! I like it more now than when I bought it.

Where's the best place to get the rivets? bar? Gluvit? any thing else I might need? How do you guys test rivets? some of them I can spin, and some of them look like I can see a gap between the rivet and hull. I'd say 95% are good but how do you tell? In one of the pics on the inside of the rivet, it appears to be more "mushroomed" out. Is this something somebody did as a "quick fix" or was it replaced before? Any and all help is awesome and this would be far more challenging without you guys.

Is there anything I'm forgetting?

That transom looks like pressure treated wood from here. You're gonna want to change that if it is.

So if the transom is completely solid with no sign of rot, tear the back half of the boat apart? What is it balsa wood?

Ok so I just read that the pressure treated reacts with aluminum . How can I can I tell? The boat has been for parked for at least five years. How long before that the transom was done is any ones guess. Would I see any wierd streaking down towards the bottom or anything?

Green tint to the wood would be your first clue, are there any stamps on the wood?? I would be investigating closely for sure. Any corrosion would be behind the wood and most likely not seen from the outside, here's what mine looked like with the original transom
looks kinda good here

and not so much here

If you can prove via color and or tagging that it is not pressure treated great, If not it really is not that much work or cost to have the peace of mind knowing what you got, and being able to seal the transom properly is priceless. And ya a lot of us go to overkill, but I plan on keeping my boat a long time. Only you can decide how far to go! We are all here to give info and encouragement, good luck and enjoy!!!

Now thats perspective. LOL now you have my attention. I'll spend some more time on this for sure now making sure. I plan on keeping this indefinitely so I'll check closely on the treated issue. If I'm not mistaken, there's an aluminum tab with a old school breaker reset screwed into the inside of the transom. If it's corrosive and the tab is aluminum I should know immediately correct? I'll look for writing and any kind of green tint....should i dig a small spot and look for a green tint? Fill with glue when done? I certainly didn't see green but I will take better pics next W/E.

Wishing - PT is bad. My SC had PT floors and I am getting tired of chasing pinhole leaks. Just saying it's best to make sure the transom isn't treated. We're looking at your greenish transom wood in the pics. It just may be the pic and you don't have PT. Hope not, bud.

I'll get to the bottom of it. Thanks. I see what you mean. One pic looks greenish and one looks ok...I'll pull some of the mounting tab off and check closely. If it's PT it's coming out.

Looks like pressure treated to me. Smart move making sure if it is or not. I've done mine and it isn't so bad to do.

Anyone have any input on the rivet picture? We're going to be doing the rivets before anything else.

Re: Buying a 79 22ft Center console tomorrow!

Check any of these other guys' threads about "leak testing" and that will get you started on how to check rivets. Obviously, the ones you can see through or that spin you'll probably want to replace. I'm not tin guy, so I'll shut up before I talk too much, but tons of these guys have been down this road before and will help soon.

I just wanted to comment on the motor. It looks like it's newer than 70s, and at the worst, I'd imagine it's the same year as the boat. If it hadn't been on a 1979 boat, I would've guessed a mid to late 80s model, but you're better off finding the model # plate and confirming for sure. You'll want to owner a Service Manual, preferably a factory version if you can find it, over the Seloc/Clymer versions (usually can find one on Ebay, well worth the $20-30 price tag). That should be a great running boat when you're done as I'd think that was the ideal powerplant back in the day.

This is the Starcraft that would convert me to a tinny guy, that's for sure. Look forward to watching it progress and good luck!

I plan giving the O/B an honest shot. Needs some cooling work and a good shake down in March. If it all works out I want to have around 8k in this thing if the old merc pans out. Turns out it's a 78 1500 black max.
