Yah, just like E$ mentioned, any spinners, loose, or missing replace em. Seepers can be sealed up with Gluvit.

For a leak test you can just fill the boat to the waterline, crawl under neath and start marking where you see leakage.

This is the Starcraft that would convert me to a tinny guy, that's for sure. Look forward to watching it progress and good luck!

Yur already a convert, admit it:p

The only thing you are lacking is one sitting in your driveway (very easy to remedy:D).

Heading out here in a few to inspect the transom. It's about 30 miles from my house otherwise I'd know by now. Any one have any recommendations on where to get the rivets, gluvit or any thing else I might need? There's a marina that stocks marine grade plywood so I'm good there.

I got the solid rivets from graingers $16 for 250 of the 5/32" x 3/8" long brazier head, I bought the pop rivets at home depot, and menards. I didn't use gluvit, I used goop coat-it from Creative-wholesale.com a 2lb kit was $19 +shipping. Epoxy from US Composites.

Creative wholesale seamed a little to good to be true to me. Did you get your product as described? Looks like a great project I am doing pretty much the same thing to mine.

Re: Buying a 79 22ft Center console tomorrow!

Updates! I've deemed the transom to be something other than PT plywood. I know for a fact that the boat sat in the weather for five years and with that I pulled bare aluminum mounting tabs off the transom and they are clean as a whistle. I can't find any markings, but the thin mounting tabs would be at least a little crusty and they are as clean as the outside of the tabs. The transom isn't completely sealed in like I would like but I feel if I can get 5-8 (probably 10) years without tearing the back half of the boat apart I'll let it ride. I pressure washed it yesterday and found that it holds water like a spaghetti strainer. Interestingly enough with the exception of open transducer mounting holes in the transom, and one seam, the back 14' of boat were absolutely tight. So that kind of goes along with the idea that someone that knew kinda what was going on did the transom and some rivets in the back. Guy's I really appreciate the heads up on PT wood. I mightv'e went out and bought that for the deck and that would've been tragic. The front half? Now that's a different story. Seeping from some, pouring like a faucet from others. Going to order everything tonight and get cracking in two weeks on the hull. Going to order my sonar this week to make sure she's sealed up nice. I'm trying to decide between goop or gluvit. I know one's cheaper but that really dosen't factor in if i'm honest. I just want the best. I might park this thing up at east harbor in Sandusky so it needs to be dry. I'm going to have a auto bilge-w-back up bilge with shore power but thats not really the point. So 5/32x3/8 brazier are the hull and the inside are just pop rivets for the deck and misc. Thanks Astor. Different sizes off course for diff needs.

Guys I'll take some nice pics today inside and out with the trailer pulled.

Can you guys reccomend a rivet gun? I'm a bit in the dark on the whole solid rivet process. Is the bucker bar complicated than chunk of steel as a back stop? We're ready for rivets and gluvit. I got the gluvit in the mail this week and I found the rivets on amazon. Any thing else that might things easier for me? We'll set rivets next weekend if I can find the gun/bucker and the correct die for this?

i'm going to clean the goop out of the bow area this w/e. Is this old gluvit or something else? This is really the only place it leaks(where it takes the great lakes pounding and trailer loading), other than one seam towards the rear. I'm definetly buying one of the T-tops earlier in the post. I think that will be sweet!

That goop in the bow area is common. I've left the goop in there in both my boats because it was in good shape. If there's some peeling up or something, you might want to clean it up some.

I've used both goop and gluvit... both seemed to work great... ask me in 10 years though.

I used closed end rivets and 3M 5200 on the below water line rivets. (I couldn't "rebuck" some of the rivets on the bottem and drilled them out) You will want a 2 handed rivet gun like this. Harbor Freight has them for around $20.

Re: Buying a 79 22ft Center console tomorrow!

CJ8, thanks for the reply. I certainly need one of the two handed riveters. I can see where it'd be easy to keep tight to the material that way. If you look in the bottom of the bow you can see some darker stuff poured in the keep area. That is where it's leaking the worst. I have about 60 hull rivets to replace. Do most people just use a hammer and a brazier die or do they use an air hammer? I'm just out in left field on the whole process. So I see some rivets on the inside that are "more flattened" than the majority. Have these been "rebucked"? How do you do this?

Man I don't know if I would've taken this on without this msg board.

I used an air hammer from harbor freight with pressure turned down to about 50psi if i remember correctly. Harbor freight has a 3X riveting gun but it costs $100.

for the bucking bar you can use a hunk of steel or even a small hand held sledge hammer. Just something flat, smooth, and has a bit of mass to it. You just hold the bucking bar or hammer firmly against the backside of the rivet

Re: Buying a 79 22ft Center console tomorrow!

Thanks man. I think this will get me heading in the right direction. I'm going to practice on a few test pieces before I try the hull. I have about 15-20 at least to drill out and another 30-40 that I'll try to reset.

Maybe we can meet up out on the big pond next summer?

Yep, try a few test pieces for sure, once you get the hang of it, its quick and easy. I still have about 30 solid rivets to do on mine.

Would be great to meet up next summer, Im determined mine is going to be ready before spring.

Re: Buying a 79 22ft Center console tomorrow!

So i tried my hand at "rebucking" some of the loose rivets and I must admit that this worked a lot better than I had anticipated. I borrowed an air hammer and went at it and it really tightens them up with very little effort. It really tightened up the keel and give me confidence moving forward that this thing will be sturdy to the point of sillyness when finished. The ones we drilled out were larger than the 5/32 rivets I ordered. Bummer but not the end of the world. I'll order more rivets this week and we'll have this thing done (Hull) before the snow flies. I really need to catch a warm weekend to apply the Gluvit. Might be hit or miss and it might actually wait for spring. Does anyone know on the container it says "apply at no less than 50* working temperature." Does it need to remain at this temp for 48 hours? I'm sure it's recommended but it's pretty much impossible in northern Ohio til April from here. Maybe the week of thanksgiving I'll catch a break. When winter really sets in I'll be shopping around for someone to paint this thing.

What do you think of like a middle of the road grey and Black on the bottom?

Re: Buying a 79 22ft Center console tomorrow!

All rivets are finished and I got gluv-it applied on Saturday. The 2# can was plenty to do what I needed to do. There was enough left over that I basically poured it in the bow and let it run all the way down to the keel. Probably wont be able to water test it as I'll be doing the tank/livewell/deck and wiring all before February roll around. If I want to have it in the water, completely painted by May I better be at it!

I haven't been very good on pictures lately as we did more plinking with our rifles than we did boat improvements. Lots more photos from here out.

Hey Astor,

Just a clarification question for you regarding re-bucking rivets.... did you put the hunk of steel on the inside of the hull (meaning inside the boat) and then hit the rivet head on from the bottom of the hull with a sledge hammer or with the air hammer and chisel? Just looking for some clarification.

Thanks,

Jim

I used an air hammer with the correct die set. My friend was on the inside of the boat with a two pound hammer and it worked out great. I had to order oversized rivets because some of the holes were oblong.

Re: Buying a 79 22ft Center console tomorrow!

Took a break and there is more to come very soon. I bought all the parts to make the trailer reliable and I'll throw those on next week. Going to water test the boat from the inside and start the wiring and put the foam in. Should start to come together very quickly. I'm buying a new 4S kicker as soon as I get my taxes back.

Don't worry, LOTS OF PICS!
