I wouldn't buy it. If you want a 6.2 for performance, why are you looking at bayliners? Lots of better boats out there- get something with a decent deadrise and a higher quality build- a formula perhaps?

Because the circulation pump stopped and the closed loop cooling stopped, the engine got COOKED. That happened to my 454- got so hot it blew the radiator cap on the closed loop system. I "fixed it" and guess what happened the next summer cruising at 3000rpm with no hard stress?

Well, the deal is off and I'm asking for my deposit back. They wouldn't make any price concessions. The bearing went out in the impeller, seizing up the water pump. The seller was saying that these things happen frequently with owning a boat, and that nothing is wrong with the engine. He also said that it didn't overheat that bad because of the freshwater cooling. Even though the temperature gauge was pegged the whole time..... I also came across this boat. Opinions?

Im in So-Cal too in West Covina. what dealership is this so I can avoid it...look at Chaparral boats. I just picked up a Sunesta from CL and I love it.. amazing boats

A Formula . . . that's the ticket :thumb:

As stated . . . maybe keep the checkbook away for now . . . look at some more boats. I looked at 12 boats before buying my 330 SS. Also, try to avoid underpowered boats, as they are not as fun to use and tougher to sell.

Thanks again for your help. That 2855 bayliner is off of craigslist, so i might have missed out on that.... Here is my criteria for a boat...

1. Cabin Cruiser
2. 23-28 ft
3. BIG power
4. Trailer
5. $16000 Max price
6. Dont want to go too old (nothing from the 80's)

I know the criteria makes life difficult to find a boat, which is probably why i have been so interested in the late 90's Bayliner Cieras. I keep on coming back to that dirty Doral 270, which now dropped its price to 13k. Ill start a separate thread regarding that boat and see what people think. Or put another way:
You're looking to pay bottom dollar and hoping to find someone desperate willing to give away their boat at a prime buying time here in SoCal especially with the weather warming up. And hoping it needs nothing major as you don't have a budget for it.

Maybe you'll find that and are are willing to wait until it shows up.

Have you been to Inland Boat Center out off the 215 yet? Lots of boats in 1 location.

If not, you might want to head out there tomorrow and talk with those guys about your criteria and see if they think you might stand a chance of that or not. Maybe after that conversation they may have a boat on consignment that has such a seller wanting to give away their boat.

I don't know where Fastommy is located but I stumbled across this dealer when looking for something. They appear to have pretty decent stuff at pretty decent prices. They are Lakeshore Yacht Sales at Great Lakes marina in Muskegon, MI (wherever that is, but sounds cold!). Anyhow they appear to be part of the Yachyworld.com selling network. Worth a look anyway.

Why would anyone keep driving after the boat overheated and with no waterpump turning?

The fact is that no matter what you buy used, this could have happened. If its a dealer, and they fix it and are willing to put some sort of warranty on it, I wouldnt be all that turned off. A used boat is a used boat. You might go with another boat and that could have happened on the last test ride before you did yours. Or it could happen the first time you take it out. At least they caught it before you were on the hook for the repair.

I wouldnt necessarily run from it, but I would have someone other than them check it out after they do repair it. Its a used boat. Anything can happen at anytime.

I can only relate my own situation, but going worked . . . Bravo 1, lost the impeller late in the day, 10 miles from the ramp, anchored in a cove, idled out to head back and the alarm went off as I was stowing the anchor (son at the helm). I checked, and was getting nothing out the exhaust (thru transom). I was trying to figure out what next and bumped the throttle and she spit just a little, and then I noticed if I ran 1000 RPM in gear she stayed at normal temp, and then found she'd even go 25 MPHish and not overheat. I got her back to the ramp, changed the pump that night and saved the weekend. Again alarm went, and by farting around I realized I could get her back without a tow, and all good. That was over 100 hours ago. So, these things are rarely black and white.

1 - Used 1995 Sea Ray 250 Sundancer, Redondo Beach, Ca - 90277 - BoatTrader.com (no trailer to be found)

2 - Used 1999 Maxum 2300 Sc, Santa Ana, Ca - 92701 - BoatTrader.com - looks like just a V-berth for bunks, but there is a trailer

3 - Used 1999 Bayliner 2355 Cierra, Upland, Ca - 91786 - BoatTrader.com - a trailer, AND a stove.

4 - Used 1997 Bayliner Cierra 2655, Newport Beach, Ca - 92663 - BoatTrader.com

If it were me, I would have RUN for my truck, not walked.
That guy would never hear from me again. Even if he gets it running ok, how long is it going to run ok.
Too many good boats out there to take that one.

Thanks for the links. #1 looks really good, and will check that out. #2 looks clean but is a cuddy cabin. #3 is the boat that is the subject of this thread . #4 looks kind of shabby for the price...
