California registration fees

I just wondered if someone could explain these fees to me. Like most things in this damn state...this makes no sense at all. (like a 45 dollar resident fishing license) My son and I both have boats that need new owner registration this year. This is what the DMV website lists under vessel registration fee's:

Vessel related registration fees.
Type of Transaction
Fee
Original Application (except for nonresidents)–Submitted in an even-numbered year.
$29
Original Application (except for nonresidents)–Submitted in an odd-numbered year.
$49

Huh? what the heck does the year in which I register a boat have to do with how much it costs? Nearly 50% more to register a boat in 2013? WTF?

Can anyone explain this to me....California boaters, is this for real? Yeah I know the difference is only 20 bucks what really?

california boat reg is good for two years. so thats the odd/even rule. a 2013 reg is good till 2015. so.... if you bought a boat in 2014, it would be half the fees.

Try $64 if you add on being able to fish in salt water and have a 2nd fishin' pole.

You're also aware that you MAY get an unsecured property tax bill right from you county assessor's office?

I stress MAY because I did get one for my Maxum boat have not gotten one for my Sea Ray yet they were purchased only 2 months apart.....

Only in California...I really ought to quit getting excited about retarded stuff that CA does, I'll probably live longer. BTW MarkSee, how's Corona these days. Used to live in Riverside and worked at American Truck Parts in Corona.

I swear, I wonder every time I'm fishing if there is some new law that I am unaware of that I'm breaking. Next thing you know, we'll be paying for a stamp that covers grief counseling for the fish's family and an enviromental study on -1 fish population decline. Jeez!

That way the dmv can be swamped/backlogged and you can wait for your paperwork for 3 months in the odd years, and they can justify having 50 extra workers on the payroll. that can sit around for the next 21 months.

Do they prorate auto registrations too, so they all expire in February of odd years?

Oops, sorry, my bad, sorry for your suffering.

Naw Roscoe, your right. Here in the land of whispering bushes, anything goes pretty much. Nothing the idiots in Sacramento (our capitol) can do that would surprise me. I do drive an antique pick-up though, well two years from official "antique" and at least I'm getting over on the DMV that way. I paid 150 bucks for it 12 years & 360,000 miles ago. I keep the engine tweaked and it passes CA emissions every time with no emission controls whatsoever. Take that DMV!

I did count though last time I paid for tags and the booklets were in 12 languages that I could see. I'm certain though that the money spent on printing isn't passed-on in registration or license fee's. It's on the inter-webz so it must be true.

Almost every state that does 2 year registrations does the same thing... They are actually SAVING you money! Think of it this way, lets say the registration period is 2012-2013, and if you bought your boat in july of 2013, you would pay the same as spring of 2011. Of course, you would get a couple months use and then pay it again... The odd/even year split lets you pay half of what the 2011 guy paid. (and you both get to pay full price for the 2014-15 season.)

We do 3 year registrations in MN, but they start any year (Always expire on Dec31). Trying to imagine what the benefit is of only having tags expire in odd years

I'm in Riverside myself, just recently moved from near Harvest Church to over by La Sierra University.. I grew up in Riverside, and we moved back here a couple years ago.. boy what a mistake, this is not the city I grew up in. Can't wait to get outta this state! Soon as the kids are out of school.. IF I can wait that long. Cheers!

Depending on when you left a lot of homes and business parks have gone in and local agencies still trying to deal with the traffic.
The housing fiasco a few years back put a stop on some further planned housing projects that will further add to traffic.

A lot of development and freeway work throughout Riverside continues......the Sunday brunch at the Mission Inn still is awesome.

easier for law enforcement to identify only one sticker, and cheaper for the issuing department, only one sticker to print, which everyone gets for 2 years straight.

They print ours on the spot and they are a different color for each expiration year just like snowmobiles. So I guess they have to change the paper in the printer once a year;) Not exactly rocket science.

"Brunch at the Mission Inn" Man do I remember that. How's fishing these days at Lake Perris? The son I'm helping to restore his boat was a toddler last time I was at the lake. (just a few years after they filled it) I rigged him up with his Snoopy pole, wax-worm & bobber. Before I got my line into the water...He had the biggest crappie I had ever seen, or seen since. 30 years later...I don't think he's seen another like that either. It's was a mutant!
It looked just like this:

I left Riverside when I joined the Marine Corps in 1975. The condo my mother owned is gone now. Right at University Ave & I-15. Not far from UCR. The only thing that really bugs me is that Naugles is gone too. Best burrito's in town.
